‘Scream VI’: 6 things we noticed in the new trailer

Fan theories have gone into overdrive since the official trailer for ‘Scream VI’ dropped yesterday afternoon.

While we know Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) won’t be coming back, the trailer proved a great distraction by packing in plenty of teasers about what’s to come. Honestly, I don’t know who we should be worried about and who we shouldn’t after watching the trailer multiple times.

With Sam (Melissa Barrera), Tara (Jenna Ortega), Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad (Mason Gooding) in New York along with Gale (Courteney Cox) and Kirby (Hayden Panettiere), the stakes look higher than ever and I’m not ruling out a shocker of a kill.

I’ve highlighted some of the most interesting aspects of the trailer but be warned, these could accidentally turn out to be spoilers so read with caution!

1
There might be multiple Ghostfaces

Over the course of the trailer we see two distinctly different Ghostface masks. One of them looks like the mask we all know and love, and the other looks weathered and worn. There’s a theory that’s been floating around for a while now that this film may be about a cult of Ghostface devotees (sounds a lot like ‘The Following’ doesn’t it?). While I’m not sold on that theory, there does seem to be more than one Ghostface causing havoc.

2
Ghostface has a shrine

Ghostface’s shrine is perhaps the biggest jaw-drop moment of the trailer. How does Gale know about it as it looks like it’s her that’s taken the group there. One of the teaser photos released also shows Gale accessing the shrine on her own. If you look closely during the trailer, you can see the outfits of all the past Ghostfaces along with the clothing of notable past characters such as Tatum (Rose McGowan) and Jill (Emma Roberts). There’s memorabilia from across all the films. Pause it, take a look and draw your own conclusions.

3
Gale finally gets a call from Ghostface – should we be worried about her?

After Dewey (David Arquette) was killed off in the last film, I’m pretty sure that no one is safe. Having said that Cox has spoken about her belief that Gale won’t die in the franchise and she’s an executive producer on this film, which means she’ll likely have had input into the storylines for her character. Still, that scene where Gale FINALLY gets called by Ghostface looks super tense and I’m still worried about her.

4
Is Dermot Mulroney’s police officer character Gale’s boyfriend? And is he attacked by Ghostface while Gale is on the phone?

As Gale is speaking to Ghostface on the phone, a person is seen in the background being hauled off by Ghostface. To me, that looks very like it might be Dermot Mulroney’s police officer character. That opens up all kinds of questions as to what Gale’s relationship with him is. Of course, it could be another character completely but colour me suspicious.

5
Could one of the Carpenter sisters be killed off?

The future does not look bright for the Carpenter sisters. The trailer shows Sam holding on to a dangling Tara and another moments shows Sam taking a very nasty fall. If I were to hazard a guess, I’d put my money on Tara not making it through the movie given that Jenna Ortega’s career is rocketing right now thanks to ‘Wednesday’. I’d rather they both survived but let’s see!

6
Are Tony Revolori and Samara Weaving the opening kills?

Why do I think this you may ask? Well both actors are only seen briefly in the trailer and they’re on the phone (possibly to each other). We don’t see either of them with any other characters so it’s a safe bet to assume that they might be the opening kills, like Maureen (Jada Prescott) and Phil (Omar Epps) in ‘Scream 2’. Both actors were also announced late into shooting too so I think I might be right on this one.
