Weedcraft Inc first impressions

Weedcraft by Vile Monarch and Devolver Digital has attracted a fair amount of flack since it released earlier this month due to the controversial nature of the games core product, weed.

YouTube have banned monetisation on videos about the game and the authorities aren’t too keen either. Given that I’ve only played about an hour so far and I’ve already been selling weed illegally, competing with rival drug gangs and bribing the local police to turn a blind eye I’m not surprised some sectors of society have been keen to bash the game.

The question is, underneath the controversy, is it a good game?

It starts off very basic and eases you into the weed growing process with a detailed tutorial. Your hand is held for quite a long time as you learn to tweak your plants and how to sell your product. Given how complicated the game can get the tutorial is a blessing.

Very quickly you’ll find that you’ve unlocked various lighting options, different soils for your plants and that you can tweak your soil at a chemical level in order to improve the quality of your product.

Your plants need watering and you can speed up their growth by clicking and holding on the correct icon and releasing at the same time. This gets boring pretty quickly but soon enough you’ll be employing staff to do this for you which adds yet another level of complication.

Your rivals will try to poach your staff or they might quit if you don’t look after them. I’ve even had one of my guys get arrested but as I’d spent a bit of time building our relationship they didn’t shop me to the police.

You can view my first hour of gameplay below:

As you progress you unlock more strains of weed and an overwhelming amount of equipment which I’ve found hard to understand how to best utilise.  You will also unlock perks which are broken down into growing, selling, research and police. All of the perks give you benefits in the respective area.

So far I’ve found Weedcraft Inc to be an easy-ish game to get into but quickly found that the number of options available to me a bit overwhelming. It can be quite enjoyable if you use your imagination to actually see yourself in the role of a wannabe drug mogul but if you’re not into detailed management sims this isn’t the game for you.

EF Games will have a full review of Weedcraft Inc later this month. If you’re interested in the game check out the official Weedcraft Inc Steam page.
