Melbourne singer-songwriter Didirri has been busy building a fan base across the world in anticipation of his debut EP release. In 2017 he sold out two headline tours following the success of his debut single Blind You and he’s supported the likes of The Temper Trap and The Jezabels. With a fair amount of buzz surrounding him, and a support slot with Vance Joy coming up, Didirri aims to build on his success so far with the release of Measurements.

The EP features six tracks including Blind You and Jude and his current single I Can’t Get Last Night Out Of My Head. Blind You kicks off the EP and it immediately puts him in the same category as the likes of Ed Sheeran and Ray LaMontagne. The acoustic ballad is a stripped-down affair that really showcases Didirri’s voice, which is the star attraction here. He has a smooth tone that features a lot of soul and he can let rip when he wants to.

Current single I Can’t Get Last Night Out Of My Head, which is the EP’s closing track, is one of the more uptempo moments. Thinking about a night of passion, Didirri sings honestly about his sexual encounter and the track features some very interesting instrumentation and backing vocals. It’s a little off-beat and quirky, which is part of its charm.

Elsewhere on the EP Didirri creates an atmosphere on the moody sing-a-long Bird Sounds, Worth the Wait is a stirring moment that feels very dreamlike and Jude is a slow-building track that combines sparse piano with intricate acoustic riffs. The standout moment on the EP comes on Formaldehyde, which transforms from an emotive ballad into an epic soundscape that demands to be turned up loud.

Measurements is a good showcase for what Didirri can do. He takes the approach of a traditional singer-songwriter but he mixes things up by playing with sounds and adding in elements you don’t expect. At times he catches you off guard as he reels you into his distinctive sound. I’ll be interested to see if he can sustain that over the course of a longer release but for now Measurements is a solid introduction to an exciting new talent.
