Nashville season 6: unpacking the trailer for the final episodes

Nashville returns in the US tonight for the final eight episodes of the Country music drama’s last season.

Expected to return in the UK within the next few weeks, Nashville will be bowing out but not before a whole load of drama if the new trailer is anything to go by. Premiering over night, the trailer suggests that every single character is going to have a rough ride.

There’s so much going on, we wanted to break it down for you and see what each character will be getting up to before the series ends.

Avery – Alannah – Gunnar love triangle

It was suggested in the first half of season six that Alannah (Rainee Lyleson) was harbouring an attraction Avery (Jonathan Jackson) despite sleeping with Gunnar (Sam Palladio) and it looks like that plot is moving forward. The trailer shows Gunnar confronting Avery and Avery and Alannah kissing. Erm, what about Juliette (Hayden Panettiere)?

Juliette comes to her senses and tries to leave the cult

Despite saying that she was staying in Bolivia, it looks like the tantrum-throwing singer has a change of heart and that’s because she’s pregnant! The trailer features plenty of scenes of Juliette trying to leave the cult but it looks like they aren’t going to let her go easy. Will she ever make it back to Nashville?

Scarlett attempts to talk Sean out of suicide

When will Scarlett (Clare Bowen) ever learn? Despite repeated warnings she inserted herself in Sean’s (Jake Etheridge) life and now that decision could wind up being the end of hers. The trailer shows a crying Scarlett trying to talk Sean out of blowing his head off with a gun in a bathroom.

Jessie and Deacon go through the ringer

Deacon’s (Charles Esten) temper got the better of him when he assaulted Brad Maitland (Jeffrey Nordling) in the mid-season finale to protect Jessie’s (Kaitlin Doubleday) son. Brad followed through with his threat to report Deacon and it seems as though that could put an end to his fledgling relationship with Jessie.

Will Lexington survives but is his career over?

Last we saw Will (Chris Carmack) he was keeling over on TV. The trailer confirms that he’s alive but he might not be well. Keen to get back to performing, Will is told that an ultrasound showed an abnormality. Does he have cancer? Will her ever perform again?

Maddie and Deacon clash over her latest behaviour

Perhaps the least exciting glimpse at the final stretch of episodes is that Maddie (Lennon Stella) gets into drinking and clashes with Deacon. At one point she suggests that she should move out of the house. Please don’t recycle that story again Nashville!

Deacon’s father shows up

Well this is a surprise. Deacon is shocked to see his father in town, the man he’s been estranged from and blames for almost ending his music career. This is likely not going to end well is it?

Brad Maitland causes a whole lot of trouble

Not content with coming between Deacon and Jessie, Brad manipulated Daphne (Maisy Stella) during the music competition by asking her about Rayna (Connie Britton). He’s also seen forcing himself onto Alannah after signing her (as a solo artist?) to his label.

Rayna James returns?

The trailer’s final scene is the most shocking as Deacon appears to see Rayna in the doorway. Could Rayna be back for a final encore? Is she a ghost? Did she survive and has been living a life out of the spotlight without telling anyone? Is Nashville going to do a Dallas on us? So. Many. Questions.

Nashville returns to CMT tonight in the US at 8/9c and should return to Sky Living HD in the UK in the coming weeks.
