Homeland 7×05 Active Measures preview

On the latest episode of Homeland, things turned from bad to worse for Saul (Mandy Patinkin) and his Brett O’Keefe (Jake Weber) situation.

If you want to avoid spoilers for Homeland season 7, we suggest you stop reading now. If you don’t mind then please keep reading.

The episode opened up with a furious President Keane (Elizabeth Marvel) paying
a visit to Wellington (Linus Roache) at his home. She wanted to discuss the Syrian airstrike, presuming the military had gone ahead with no authorisation. Instead, Wellington explained that he authorised it behind her back.

He tried to explain that he was looking out for her and trying to get her a mark in the win column. Keane felt her presidency had been hijacked and his explanation didn’t really help. What both of them didn’t know was that Carrie (Claire Danes) saw the entire exchange via her hidden cameras.

Carrie continued on the trail of Simone Martin (Sandrine Holt) and discovered she took a cash advance of just less than $10,000 the day McClendon died. Carrie had Max (Maury Sterling) pop round to investigate Martin’s movements further. He discovered that she actually made five stops that day. Each time she obtained a cash sum with the final total around $50,000. Max speculated was the fee for the hit on McClendon.

Back to the standoff between the FBI and O’Keefe, the FBI continued to prepare to react or for an assault. They tried to observe what was happening using a drone but one of men with O’Keefe shot it down.

Things turned bad when a young man called J.J. ran off into the woods after his dog. It ran straight for an FBI patrol and they shot the dog dead. J.J. appeared shortly after and went to grab his gun. Before he could the FBI put a bullet in him too. They wanted to extract him to a hospital but some of the men came and took him back to the compound. They also took the FBI agent who shot him.

Saul tried to calm the situation but the FBI refused to evacuate J.J. unless they got their man out. Saul went over Agent Maslin’s (Matt Servitto) head and had Keane step in to overrule.

When the paramedics arrived they were searched before being allowed inside. One of them tended to J.J. while the other took a look at the capture agent. While checking him over she placed a listening device on a radiator. As they took J.J. off to the hospital, O’Keefe put out a short broadcast before being told to stop by J.J.’s mother.

At the hospital, a mystery man, presumably a journalist, snuck inside. He then grabbed himself some scrubs and was able to gain access to the area where J.J. was receiving treatment. He covertly took a series of photos until he got one where it looked like J.J. was alone. He emailed it with a subject saying the FBI had left him to bleed to death.

When the fake news of J.J’s death hits the news the men at the compound geared up for revenge. Saul urgently called O’Keefe to get him to tell everyone that J.J. was fine but he didn’t give them the news. J.J.s dad executed the agent they were holding hostage.

This sent Maslin crazy and he ordered an immediate assault on the compound. As the bullets began to fly, O’Keefe took shelter in the basement and carrid out a live broadcast of the chaos. Eventually the FBI stormed the compound and extracted O’Keefe. On the way out he got to see the full tragedy of what had happened and it was all his fault.

Elsewhere in the episode, Carrie’s sister Maggie (Amy Hargreaves) forced her to take the Seroquel that she was prescribed. Carrie later went out with Dante (Morgan Spector) and bought some black market meds to keep her stable. Carrie requested that Dante observe her and tell her when she needed to take each of the meds. Carrie has a plan to tackle Wellington and Martin but warned Dante it was completely illegal. He understood the risks and wanted to work with her.
