The episode opened up with Elizabeth (Téa Leoni) trying out some Yoga at home. She decided to pause the workout to check out the news while she continued to workout. Henry (Tim Daly) interrupted her to talk about the situation with Dmitri (Chris Petrovski).

At the office, Nadine (Bebe Neuwirth) updated Elizabeth on her workload. She also told her that the baby shower for Daisy (Patina Miller) had been moved forward to the following day. Blake (Erich Bergen) was looking forward to the baby shower and had some game suggestions but everyone else hated baby games.

Elizabeth found Jay (Sebastian Arcelus) waiting for her in her office. He spoke to her about a Surian refugee camp that needed funding for electricity.

President Dalton (Keith Carradine) chaired a budget meeting with Russell Jackson (Željko Ivanek). They were trying to prevent a looming government shutdown but were up against Senator Morejon (José Zúñiga) who was being he usual awkward self and frustrating the process. Stevie (Wallis Currie-Wood) was on minute-taking duties.

Henry took the news about Dmitri’s painkiller addiction to Hugh Haymond (Michael Gaston). He told Henry that it was a sackable offence. Henry spoke up for Dmitri for being honest and his past actions. Haymond offered a solution to get Dmitri clean but said if it didn’t work out it would be on Henry.

Henry went to see Dmitri but found only his sister Talia (Masha King). She thought he was on a job and didn’t know where he was. Henry explained the situation and they both became worried.

Elizabeth asked President Dalton for funds to give the refugee camp electricity. He had to turn her down because of the budget. Elizabeth said she would find another way.

Henry used the CIA to track a payphone that Dmitri had used. He took Talia to try and find him. They tracked him to a motel and found him trying to detox himself on his own. Henry gave him a lecture and said he needed more help and Haymond wanted him in rehab. Dmitri said he was better and now clean but Henry took him to rehab anyway.

Elizabeth came up with the idea of introducing solar technology to the refugee camp. Nadine said it was worth a shot. They just needed to find a contractor who could do it, for free.

At the baby shower everyone gave Daisy their presents for the baby. Jay turned up late with his gift. He also had news and needed Elizabeth. He had found her a contractor that could do what they needed. The problem was that the company was Israeli. As usual, Elizabeth had an idea and a meeting with Israeli officials was enough to convince them to help.

With Senator Morejon refusing to budge the President decided to leave the meeting three hours early. Instead he went to visit veterans while the shutdown deadline ran out.

Elsewhere in the episode, Nadine took a call from her son Roman. He told her that she was to be a grandmother and also had a favour to ask of her. They decided to move back to the US west coast but his wife’s name was on the no-fly list. The favour was for Nadine to get her name off the list. It was a struggle but she managed it.

Elizabeth was upset about the shutdown going ahead. Nadine went to see her to tell her that she was leaving. She wanted to spend more time with her son, his wife and her new grandchild. Elizabeth understood and they thanked each other and said goodbye.

At the end of the episode, Elizabeth gave a speech to her staff about the shutdown and told them they were all essential. In Syria the refugee camp finally got power. Nadine took her final walk to the elevator as she left the building.

The next episode is Shutdown. With the government shutdown showing no sign of progress, Elizabeth must negotiate an agreement between the White House and the opposition.
