Alt-country duo Two Ways Home have been making a name for themselves on the UK scene since 2015, releasing their third EP Closest Stranger earlier this year. Ahead of a string of summer festival dates and an appearance at Country Music Week in October, last night they took to the stage at Camden’s Green Note to perform an intimate acoustic set.

The group opened their performance with the atmospheric Closest Stranger, the title track from their latest EP. They’re particularly known for their harmonies and showcased these straight away, with Lewis and Izzy’s voices blending together well in the sparse verses. This was followed by Two Short Years, which picked up the tempo with its optimistic lyrics and twangy instrumentation.

There was a good balance between the slower numbers and more upbeat tracks, with highlights including the stripped-back Best Part Of Me, the haunting futuristic vibe of Still In Love and their sultry spin on Niall Horan’s Slow Hands. Izzy’s sweet yet powerful voice particularly shone on the delicate Time Lasts Forever and Take My Hand, whilst Lewis stood out on No Longer Mine, a Southern rock-infused tune. I also really liked the mix of uptempo melody and slightly melancholy lyrics on Home Again and the simple yet heart-wrenching Better Days.

Throughout the set Lewis and Izzy were really relaxed, joking with the audience and laughing along when things didn’t quite go to plan. It was clear that they love playing together and their enthusiasm was infectious, creating a warm feeling amongst the crowd. They were also joined on stage by musician Michael Clancy, who added a lovely vocal tone and some impressive guitar solos to the mix.

For me the standout moment came when the trio played two unplugged songs mid-set, crowding around an old-fashioned microphone. They kicked off with Don’t Give Up On Me Tonight, a soulful song packed with yearning lyrics and soaring harmonies, before moving into their version of the Eagles classic Take It Easy. It was a fantastic showcase for their musical abilities and songwriting skills and really highlighted their stunning vocals too.

Two Ways Home rounded off the show with Push And Pull, a folky upbeat song with a gorgeous blend of vocals, and the carefree Just For Now. Both songs summed them up perfectly as a group – beautiful harmonies, driving rhythms, great musicianship and a real sense that they love what they do. I’m really looking forward to seeing them live again soon and highly recommend you do too!
