Madam Secretary 3×19 Global Relief preview

On the latest episode of Madam Secretary, Elizabeth (Téa Leoni) enlisted the help of a Hollywood star and Henry (Tim Daly) had a brush with death.

At the start of the episode, a young woman was shown crying for her mother. She was being held captive with a number of other women as part of a human trafficking ring in Kyrgyzstan.

Elizabeth was interrupted by the FBI while discussing budget cuts with her staff. They wanted her help with the president of Kyrgyzstan. She spoke with her team about how to tackle the problem. Later during a call with Kyrgyzstan the president agreed to work with US if they could get movie star Ashley Whittaker to attend his birthday party.

Ashley was called to the State Department and there they could only give her scant detail on the mission. Her mother was completely against the idea of her going to Kyrgyzstan. Ashley later changed her mind after a video of the kidnapped girls was shown.

Ashley kept her part of the deal and attended the birthday bash. However the mission to save the girls went wrong. They found the truck they were being transported in but the girls had all suffocated to death in the back. The loss hit the State Department team really hard.

Meanwhile, Henry decided it was time to extract Ian Conroy (Darren Pettie) from the cult. At the next meet with Ian he was going to take him back in. While they met the FBI raided the cult’s compound but found no evidence of the missing bomb.

Henry checked Ian’s truck and found the bomb in the back. Henry took action quickly and knocked Ian to the ground. He then jumped in the truck and took off at speed. He decided to try and get the truck as far away from a populated area as possible. He eventually found a large field and drove into the middle of it. As he walked away from the truck it exploded and it suddenly hit home just how close he had been to death.

Elsewhere in the episode, Alison (Kathrine Herzer) and Jason (Evan Roe) attended prom. When Alison’s date Thad turned up to collect her, Henry took a picture of his driving license. He also tried to get Alison to take a coat but she refused.

Things didn’t go so well at the prom. Jason overhead Thad talking about his sister. He was telling friends that she was leading him on because of her dress. Jason wanted to confront Thad but instead hid in one of the cubicles. Remembering the trouble he got in last time he let his anger out stopped him.

Later at home, Alison was upset. She told Jason that Thad had been pushing to get her alone in a room. He let slip about what Thad had said and she was annoyed that he hadn’t done anything to protect her.

Jason later decided to shame Thad and wrote ‘slut shamer’ down the side of his car in shaving foam. It also damaged the paint on the car. Thad wasn’t happy but Jason didn’t get in trouble. In fact the Dean and his parents were all quite proud of him.

At the end of the episode, Elizabeth called the team together to explain the budget had passed. She also wanted to tackle the issue of why what had happened with the girls had hit the team so hard. Jay (Sebastian Arcelus) read a poem called Good Bones.

The next episode is Global Relief. When rebel groups threaten Elizabeth’s Somalian food relief programme, she reluctantly considers turning to a Russian arms dealer for help.
