Mr. Kaplan’s (Susan Blommaert) backstory was revealed on the latest episode of The Blacklist.

Through a series of flashbacks it was revealed that Mr. Kaplan was hired by Liz’s (Megan Boone) mother Katarina Rostova (Lotte Verbeek) to be Liz’s caretaker. While working for Katarina, Mr. Kaplan learned that her employer was having an affair with Reddington (James Spader) and that he believed he was Liz’s father.

When Katarina was forced to go on the run, Mr. Kaplan was tasked with giving Liz to Sam (William Sadler) to raise. After doing so Mr. Kaplan embarked on a relationship with Annie Kaplan (Amy Rutberg) until she was killed and Mr. Kaplan shot by an angry customer.

Red contacted Mr. Kaplan to hire her to be his cleaner and to protect Liz on the understanding that she always puts Liz first before anything else.
