Our new TV obsession arrived last week and it’s a show we think you should be tuning in to.
Riverdale, based on the characters from Archie Comics, is a new teen mystery with a murder at its heart. On the Fourth of July Jason Blossom (Trevor Stines) died while boating with his twin sister Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch). According to Cheryl he fell into the water to retrieve a glove she dropped and was swept away. So far, so suspicious!
Much of the first episode was spent establishing the main characters of the show. Archie (K. J. Apa), the central character, has a passion for music and is hiding a fling he enjoyed with his teacher Miss Grundy (Sarah Habel). In fact the two were getting hot and heavy when they heard shots fired on the morning of Fourth of July but can’t come forward without getting Miss Grundy in trouble.
Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), the daughter of a million facing embezzlement charges, arrived in town and immediately befriended Archie and Betty (Lili Reinhart), the girl-next-door who has feelings for Archie. Despite trying to set Betty up with Archie, Veronica took advantage of seven minutes in heaven during a party and made out with Archie. I’m betting that’s going to cause some issues once Betty finds out…
It was revealed that Betty lived with her very protective mother Alice (Mädchen Amick) who was less than impressed when Betty joined the cheerleading squad and became friends with Veronica.
There’s going to be a lot coming out about Veronica I suspect as it was briefly mentioned that her mother Hermione (Marisol Nichols) has a history with Archie’s dad Fred (Luke Perry).
The episode also introduced Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), a former friend of Archie’s, who was writing a book about the drift in their friendship, and Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) who is the openly gay best friend of Betty.
In the final moments of the episode, Kevin and his closeted hook-up Moose (Cody Kearsley) discovered Jason’s body in the lake as they prepared to skinny dip.
The next episode of the season is A Touch of Evil. As new details of Jason’s death begin to emerge, Archie pleads with Miss Grundy to come forward with what they heard at Sweetwater River.
