Full of wonder and excitement, The BFG is exactly what fans of the book will love. This magical retelling of Roald Dahl’s seminal book delivers plenty of charm and spectacle as we get to witness a children’s classic re-imagined onto the big screen.

Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) is an orphan who doesn’t quite fit in and longs to be part of a family. One night, she witnesses a giant (Mark Rylance) walking the streets of London. Having spotted her, the giant takes Sophie along with him back to Giant Country to avoid being detected. Once there, she learns that this big, friendly giant doesn’t want to eat children (like all the other bad-tempered giants) and instead develops a friendship with the BFG that will last her a lifetime.

In many ways this film could only have been achieved by the master of magical cinema, Steven Spielberg. A true titan of modern story-telling, Spielberg knows how to engage an audience in spectacular fashion. Coupling him with one of the most beloved books in the world was a simple equation that has guaranteed this film’s success.

CGI plays a large part in the film, as one would expect. The attention to detail here is brilliant and really allows the human performances of the cast to shine through the groundbreaking animation. Mark Rylance does a stellar job bringing the endearing Big Friendly Giant to life, and his rapport with young newcomer Ruby Barnhill is a joy to watch. Expect big things from Barnhill in the future too – she brings warmth to the role of Sophie that is easily relatable and wonderful to witness.

Jemaine Clement, Bill Hader and Adam Godley are just some of the great actors who gleefully chew up their scenes as giants. Clement in particular does a remarkable job and creates a boo-hiss villain with plenty of amusing moments thrown in. As for the human cast, Penelope Wilton entertains as The Queen whilst Rebecca Hall and Rafe Spall are somewhat underused but still delightful as aides to the monarch.

With gorgeous sets, involving action and a heart-warming tale of friendship at its core, The BFG does Dahl proud with a faithful reimagining. The humour is spot-on and with such an affecting central turn from Rylance and Barnhill, the magic of The BFG continues to strongly live on.
