Sausage Party, Café Society, Morgan and more: In cinemas this week

Stuck for what to watch at the weekend? Let Entertainment Focus help you with our handy guide to this week’s new releases. From the biggest blockbusters to the best in independent and world cinema, we’ve got it covered.

Sausage Party

What’s it about? The premise is simple and genius: all the products at your local supermarket can talk, think and have feelings. The frankfurters flirt and joke with the buns. The bagels and middle eastern flatbreads are at constant war with each other. What unites them all is the dream of being chosen by the god-like humans and taken to the “great beyond” outside the sliding doors of the supermarket. Only then do they discover the horrifying truth – that humans, chop, mince, grate, boil, burn, fry, and eat them. It’s at this moment of terrifying realisation that Sausage Party becomes a survival horror film. From the minds of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Sausage Party is profane, obscene, and hilarious, and seasoned with a dark pinch of satire. Do not take your kids to see this film! It may be an animated comedy about anthropomorphised food stuffs, but this is not for children!

Who’s in it? (Voices) Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Edward Norton, Salma Hayek

Café Society

What’s it about? This year’s addition to the Woody Allen filmography sees him once again team up with Jesse Eisenberg, for this 1930s set romantic comedy. Eisenberg plays Bobby, a New Yorker who heads to Hollywood hoping to find a new start away from the Bronx and working for his father. He gets a job as an assistant for his Hollywood agent uncle, and then falls in love with his secretary. Like much of late-era Allen, the film is visually beautiful and romanticised, shooting LA and NYC with the same loving glow in which he bathed Rome, Paris, and Barcelona. Eisenberg is the perfect proxy for Allen’s persona, but all eyes will be on Kristen Stewart, who continues her run of terrific performances.

Who’s in it? Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell, Blake Lively

Morgan

What’s it about? This science-fiction thriller from first time director Luke Scott, could almost be seen as a superhero origin story. A lab experiment by a group of scientists has resulted in the creation of Morgan, a human looking girl, with unnatural and dangerous abilities. In a traditional comic book narrative, she would escape or be let loose to either destroy the world or save the day. But this is not that kind of film. After an incident in the lab, the corporate paymasters who are funding this work send one of their own to assess the situation. Is the collateral damage worth the investment, or should “it” be terminated? The film probes at the ethical and philosophical nature of what they are doing. Whilst Morgan is only a child, they have in fact created a monster.

Who’s in it? Kate Mara, Anya Taylor-Joy, Toby Jones, Rose Leslie, Michelle Yeoh, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Paul Giamatti

Brotherhood

What’s it about? Noel Clarke brings to a conclusion his trilogy of inner city thrillers set on the mean streets of West London. Coming in the wake of Kidulthood and Adulthood, Brotherhood picks up the story of Sam, the reformed gang member, now trying to live a respectable and law-abiding life, with his girlfriend and two kids. This is threatened when a face from the past comes hunting for revenge. Whilst it follows a fairly predictable path, this is essential viewing for fans of the first two films.

Who’s in it? Noel Clarke, Michael ‘Stormzy’ Omari, Steven Cree, Olivia Chenery, Tonia Sotiropoulou, Jason Maza
