Dancing Bear at West Yorkshire Playhouse

Jamie Fletcher presents a struggle between faith and sexuality.

This February Dancing Bear arrives at West Yorkshire Playhouse. The musical play follows the story of Conor, an impressionable young gay man who is dealing with the pressure of trying to please his family, his church and his God, whilst also navigating his way through a prism of confusion surrounding his own queerness.

Through live music, movement, drag, and text, Dancing Bear is full of compassion, candour and humour, and offers an unflinching provocation in addressing the often desperate balancing act many gay people continue to face between personal integrity, social acceptance and spiritual peace.

Conceived by director/musician Jamie Fletcher and writer/musician Beccy Owen, Dancing Bear is a relevant and moving piece of theatre that deftly swings between the bleak and the bawdy. A ten-strong cast present an experimental, story-based discourse surrounding the current tipping point between Christianity and Homosexuality.

The show explores personal stories surrounding faith and sexuality. Part-theatre, part-gig, at its heart is a question that is relevant to people of all backgrounds and beliefs: ‘how and who should we love?’

Dancing Bear is at West Yorkshire Playhouse on Wednesday 10th February at 7:45pm. Ticketsc cost £12.50. Book online at wyp.org.uk or call the Box Office on 0113 213 7700.
