Derek Hough taking a break from Dancing With The Stars

Dancing With The Stars’ five-time champion Derek Hough will not be participating in the upcoming 20th season of the hit dancing show it has been confirmed.

Hough, who competed in season 19 with YouTube star Bethany Mota, will miss the new season due to his role in New York Spring Spectacular opposite Nashville star Laura Benanti. The show will open on 7th March for a limited run meaning that it’s not possible for Hough to do both the show and Dancing With The Stars.

Since joining Dancing With The Stars as a pro dancer in 2007, Hough has picked up the trophy a record-breaking five times. He has won with Brooke Burke (2008), Nicole Scherzinger (2010), Jennifer Grey (2010), Kellie Pickler (2013) and Amber Riley (2013). In the 19th season, which aired at the end of 2014, Hough placed fourth with Bethany Mota.

Outside of Dancing With The Stars US fans have seen Derek in an arc on hit ABC show Nashville playing actor Noah West. In the show his character filmed a Patsy Cline biopic with Hayden Panettiere’s character Juliette Barnes.
