EF’s top picks at The Great Escape 2014

The Great Escape is renowned for championing new music and this is one of the qualities of this festival we love. This year is no different and EF has put together a list of acts that are worth catching live.

MisterWives

MisterWives are a three piece which started making music in 2012. Frontwoman Mandy Lee is the powerhouse vocalist with an opera background from Queens. Lee met Will Hehir and Etienne Bowler in New York where she was making music. The three immediately connected and started making music together. The result is MisterWives a mix of pop music and folk. We like the rawness of this band and think there’s a lot of potential there.

When can you see them at TGE?  7.30pm – 8th May Where? Digital stage

Demob Happy

Demob Happy are Brighton locals and as such the band are quite popular in the little seaside town. Last year the band played The Great Escape and caused a bit of a stir by just playing from the back of their van on the street whenever they felt like it! The trick seemed to have worked as this year they are set to play a few venues across the festival. Their music is mellow and edgy, which we like. Make sure to catch them play a special secret gig.

When can you see them at TGE? 7.30 – 8th May Where? HHH & Boon Mag party @ Bleach –Facebook Event

Slaves

Slaves are a Kent based duo with a powerful sound. The band recently scored a deal with Virgin EMI, which is all down to their confrontational noise clashing with droll lyrical observations and of course the band’s live shows. Slaves are set to play a bunch of festivals this summer and will also be supporting The Libertines at Hyde Park.

When can you see them at TGE? 6.30 – 10th May Where? The Fly @ Brighton Coalition

Purple

Purple is a band we are aching to see play live. Indeed this vibrant Texan piece has caused a bit of a stir at this year’s SXSW gaining a reputation for being party-starters and if there’s something we like it’s a party! Purple blend garage-rock perfectly with their live shows, which are fun and hugely entertaining.

When can you see them at TGE? 4.30 – 9th May (RSVP) Where? Purple– One Inch Badge/Rockfeedback show @ Boutique

Death At Sea

Death At Sea are a haunting and perhaps even strange band but that’s never put us off an act before. These lot make some intense tracks and top it with their interesting looks. If you fancy something different check them out this weekend.

When can you see them at TGE? 11.30pm – 9th May Where?  Blind Tiger Club

Now The Great Escape isn’t just about the small bands these days there are some pretty heavyweight acts playing the festival and you can always expect an exciting secret gig. If you are not interested in catching any of the future stars you can enjoy the likes of Little Dragon, Wild Beasts and American superstar Kelis.

When/where can you see them at TGE?

Little Dragon 8th May – 10.00pm @ Brighton Coalition

Wild Beasts 9th May – 9.45pm @ Brighton Dome

Kelis 10th May – 9.45pm @ Brighton Dome

There you have it our little list of some of the many acts to check out at this year’s Great Escape festival. All you have to do now is go ahead and enjoy your festival.
