New poster debuts for The Wolverine

A new poster has just been released for The Wolverine, showing a despairing Hugh Jackman in front of a Japanese metropolis.

Back in 2009, some of the X-Men Origins: Wolverine posters featured Hugh Jackman with a team of mutants behind him. However, all of the posters for The Wolverine have, so far, had Wolverine on his own. Either they want to keep the other characters secret until closer to the release date or the new poster for The Wolverine implies the film will focus solely on Wolverine’s character. The latter is likely, as Wolverine is notoriously a loner and although X-Men Origins: Wolverine was commercially successful, it was not well-received by fans. Having director James Mangold on-board also backs this up, as his previous work includes challenging character-driven films such as Girl, Interrupted and Walk the Line.

Jackman has gone on record to say that The Wolverine is a stand alone, non-sequel to X-Men Origins, so there’s still very little information to get your adamantium claws into, but here’s the official synopsis:

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, The Wolverine finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed.

Hugh Jackman is also set to return as Wolverine in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future’s Past in 2014, so expect tie-ins and cameos.

The Wolverine will be in cinemas worldwide, beginning in July 2013. Check out the new poster:
