Emilia Mitiku – I Belong To You album review

It might feel like Emilia Mituku has been away from the British charts for quite some time, you might be wondering what she’s been up to since her last release, which was eight years ago! Emilia is a big name in her native Sweden, where she has been continuing to release records and she is now something of an icon in her home country. Emilia’s biggest hit to date, is her song called Big Big World and there is no comparison between the person that Emilia was back then, to the woman that she has now become. Emilia has referred to this album as ‘vintage pop’ and we think that it’s a pretty unique and accurate description of the songs although we would lean more towards a soulful-jazz-vintage feel, rather than calling the album ‘pop’.

Emilia has grown as an artist and a woman during that time and the word that we would describe her album is: beautiful. Heartfelt lyrics are written throughout the album and many are very touching to listen to. I Belong To You shows Emilia being open to vulnerability and displaying her heart open to all as to how she feels about a special someone, we imagine that the song was written about her now husband. That song couldn’t be any more different to the song on the album called You’re Not Right For Me. You’re Not Right For Me was written about an ex-love, whom she felt grateful for, for having that relationship and being with him for that time, but now she has moved on and is able to look back at that with fond memories – the person is question remains a friend of hers. We can all relate to looking back at previous relationships and thinking wistfully, yet being glad that we went through that relationship, even though we now release that we are better off not being in that relationship!

Emilia grew up listening to the likes of Billie, Ella etc and their influence can be heard on this album, the difference being that Emilia adds her own unique voice and twists to proceedings, to add to the influences that she carries with her. We feel that there may have been quite a lot of soul searching involved with the making and writing of this album and the songs show how Emilia has grown as a woman over the last few years. We were very interested to listen to Emilia’s version of Dream A Little Dream, a song that she has covered on the album and we are very pleased by what she has come up with. Emilia has said that she wanted to cover the song, as it’s a song that she loves and wherever she is, when she hears this song, she will stop what she is doing and just be lost in the moment of the song. That’s how we feel when we listen to her version of the track. She has done the track justice and it is a gorgeous cover.

The mood of the album ends with some melancholy numbers, such as You’re Breaking My Heart, Witchcraft and Forgive Me. We particularly like the intro to Witchcraft, it sounds as though magic is filtering through the first opening chords! They’re all wonderful tracks that make us feel very relaxed whilst listening to them. The songs on the album are relaxing, soothing, soulful, mellow and they’re all from the heart. We can imagine playing this song in the background whilst enjoying dinner with friends, with a glass of wine, having a good old chat! That’s not to say that the music is merely ‘background music’, but it’s just that the music is so relaxing and it’s a really lovely album of well-written songs that we definitely recommend you to buy and have a listen to.
