We loved Valerie’s last song – Working Woman Blues and were very excited to take a listen of her new track. You Can’t Be Told opens up in a haze of blues, jazz and rock. You can imagine stumbling upon a small, dirty, songwriters club and imagining seeing some of the best talents in the land do their thing. Luckily for us, Valerie is one of those people who have been taken from such places and into the mainstream, which is where she belongs, so that her talents can be heard by the music loving population.
This track is gorgeous. When you read about who the creators of this song is and the magic that they have come up with in the past, it comes as no surprise that this song is equally brilliant. Dan Auerbach is the co-worker of this song, who has previously worked with the likes of The Black Keys along with Valerie and Kevin Augunas, who has worked with the likes of Florence and The Machine.
The layering of multi-vocals to open up the song, makes the track sound like an instant anthem that would get everyone singing along. The song already sounds like a classic, it sounds like something that has been written by a classic band from the 60-s/70’s and it sounds like a cover, it is that good. Valerie sings with so much soul, class and verve. You feel as if you could listen to her gorgeous voice all day long. The electric guitar riffs on the song are luscious and give a lot of depth to the track.
We only wish that there were more people of her talent out there for us to listen to, there really isn’t enough of this calibre of talent out there at the moment and listening to this track is like a breath of fresh air. We can’t wait to catch her at some of her live shows this month, we can only imagine how good she would sound singing live, with a live band of talented musicians. We’re very excited indeed about Valerie June and urge everyone to take a listen to her work!
