Bruce Springsteen’s landmark album ‘Nebraska' is set for a deep dive like never before. This autumn, Sony Music will release ‘Nebraska ’82: Expanded Edition,' a five-disc box set that sheds new light on the creation of one of Springsteen’s most enduring and unlikely classics. Arriving October 17, the collection will include The E Street Band’s long-rumoured “Electric Nebraska” sessions, solo outtakes from the era, a newly shot performance film of Nebraska in its entirety, and a 2025 remaster of the original album. Pre-orders right here.
The project is previewed with a previously unreleased version of ‘Born in the U.S.A.,' originally written alongside the Nebraska material. Recorded in April 1982, the trio performance with Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent strips away the keyboards for a raw, punk-inspired approach. “We threw out the keyboards and played basically as a three-piece,” Springsteen recalled. “It was kinda like punk rockabilly. We were trying to bring Nebraska into the electric world.”
Alongside the full Electric Nebraska sessions, the set includes solo rarities from Springsteen, such as home recordings of ‘Losin’ Kind,' ‘Child Bride' and ‘Downbound Train,' as well as tracks from a one-off 1982 solo studio session including ‘Gun In Every Home' and ‘On the Prowl.' A highlight of the box set is a present-day performance film of the Nebraska album, played in sequence for the first time and captured at New Jersey’s Count Basie Theatre by longtime collaborator Thom Zimny. Reflecting on revisiting the material, Springsteen said: “I think in playing these songs again to be filmed, their weight impressed upon me. I’ve written a lot of other narrative records, but there's just something about that batch of songs on Nebraska that holds some sort of magic.”
The expanded set will be followed just a week later by the feature film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, released in cinemas October 24 by 20th Century Studios. Directed by Scott Cooper and adapted from Warren Zanes’ acclaimed book, the film stars Jeremy Allen White as Springsteen and Jeremy Strong as longtime manager and producer Jon Landau, alongside Stephen Graham, Odessa Young, Paul Walter Hauser, Gaby Hoffman, Marc Maron, and David Krumholtz. The movie traces both the personal and creative journey that led to the stark brilliance of Nebraska, bringing the story of its creation to the big screen for the first time.
