Ealing Comedy classic ‘The Titfield Thunderbolt’ comes to 4K UHD

Studiocanal has announced a new 2-disc 4K UHD Collector’s Edition release of the classic Ealing comedy ‘The Titfield Thunderbolt', arriving on 15th June as part of its Vintage Classics range.

Directed by Charles Crichton and written by Oscar-winner T.E.B. Clarke, the 1953 film stars George Relph, Stanley Holloway, John Gregson and Sid James in the story of a rural village fighting to save its railway line by running it themselves.

The new release has been meticulously restored in 4K from the original three-strip camera negative, with restoration specialists Silver Salt Restoration spending more than 500 hours cleaning and repairing the film.

Widely regarded as one of Ealing Studios’ most beloved comedies, ‘The Titfield Thunderbolt' captures post-war Britain with its mix of eccentric humour, steam locomotives and countryside charm. The screenplay was inspired by the preservation of the Talyllyn Railway, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year.

The Collector’s Edition includes a range of new and archive bonus features, including broadcaster Tim Dunn exploring the railway that inspired the film, interviews with cinematographer Douglas Slocombe, behind-the-scenes footage and a British Pathé short. A 64-page booklet and poster are also included.

‘The Titfield Thunderbolt' will be released on 4K UHD Collector’s Edition on 15th June and is available to pre-order now.
