When it comes to games, it’s often the flashy titles that get the most attention and hype. That means that games outside of the norm can get a bit lost and with so many developers and publishers out there, it can be hard to keep track. While I love a good shooter as much as the next person, I’m always on the hunt for something a little different and with ‘Origament: A Paper Adventure’, I’ve most definitely found that. From publisher Assemble Entertainment and developer Space Sauce Studio, the game is a cosy puzzle experience that’s unlike anything else I’ve played before.
Taking control of a letter, and guided by an omnipresent cat, gamers must navigate through a variety of world-themed environments. The letter can turn into four different forms – a ball, a boat, a plane and a shuriken – and you must switch between them all in order to progress through each of the worlds. The aim of the game is simple – navigate the letter through the environment and along the way collect coins and look out for hidden bonuses and games.

In every environment there are plenty of challenges that can derail your progress, and you must think about each of the forms your letter can take to navigate successfully. As a ball you can roll around, and arguably have the most control over the letter, while as a boat you can sail through water with ease. The plane form enables you to take advantage of air vents to avoid hazardous elements and the shuriken can propel the letter and destroy obstacles. You can also use the various forms to activate mechanics within the environments to help you progress. Throughout, you’ll find that using a combination of the forms will give you the best chance of success.
The cat that appears throughout is there to offer some guidance, albeit fairly abstract, and it moves around the environments appearing every now and again. It is also present when you complete a world and move on to the next one. For each world you successfully navigate, you collect an origami fragment, which unlocks another portal, accessible via a stone. Each one is matched to a specific colour, and it thrusts you into a new world-themed environment such as Japan and Venice. There’s also a very fun Wild West-themed environment too. In the portal room, you can also exchange your coins for skins and origami guidance.

Visually the game is very attractive to the eye. The environments, built with the Unreal Engine 5, have been brought to life with impressive detail and there’s plenty to take in as you navigate around. Each of the world’s you encounter is very different visually, and that helps make each one feel varied. The visuals and the music play into the game’s relaxing feel, and this is a game for those who like to take their time. The puzzles aren’t the most challenging but they are sufficiently difficult to keep you entertained for a few hours.
‘Origament: A Paper Adventure’ delivers the cosy and relaxing experience that it promises. It won’t be for every gamer but if you like to play something that’s not going to increase your stress levels, this is a solid choice. It’s clear that plenty of love and attention has gone into the game, and I had a lovely time playing it. I also found myself wanting to go back to it, which is a surefire sign of a game that’s worthy of your time.
