Australian singer-songwriter Fanny Lumsden is back with her first release since her 2023 award-winning album ‘Hey Dawn,' delivering a surprising and powerful take on Gotye’s global hit ‘Somebody That I Used to Know,' originally featuring Kimbra. Lumsden’s version showcases her signature blend of authenticity and creativity, this time with the full force of her touring band, The Prawn Stars, appearing on a studio recording for the first time.
Produced by Matt Fell, Dan Freeman, and Lumsden herself, the track captures the live energy that has made her shows such a hit. Mixing duties were handled by Fell, while mastering came from William Bowden, who also mastered the original version of the song.
“After doing our own version of ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ on ABC’s Spicks and Specks last year, we started adding it to our live show,” Lumsden explained. “We’ve loved playing around with it so much that we thought it was about time we recorded it. It’s the first track to feature my entire live touring band, and it makes me so happy that each of them brought a little of themselves to the song.”
The accompanying music video, filmed in the scenic Upper Murray region of Australia, was directed and produced by Lumsden and Dan Stanley Freeman. It was captured in just 90 minutes while the band was visiting to play the Man From Snowy River Festival.
The new release lands just ahead of another major touring run for Lumsden, including a 21-date return to the UK and Ireland this summer. Highlights include performances at Brudenell Club in Leeds, Nice N Sleazy in Glasgow, and the Royal Albert Hall. Following her sold-out Country Halls Tour debut in Scotland earlier this year, Lumsden and The Prawn Stars will bring the beloved grassroots tour series back to the UK, performing in community halls off the beaten track while raising funds for local causes.
She’ll also join Paul Kelly and Lucinda Williams for a major tour across Australia later this year. In between shows, Lumsden and her band are actively working on new music, with more releases expected before the end of 2024.
