‘Sonic The Hedgehog' is going from strength-to-strength on the big screen, with the third instalment in the franchise taking more than $483 million at the global box office.
That makes the film the most successful in the series so far so it's no surprise that ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4' has been announced for 2027. Available now to buy on Digital, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3' finds Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails back for their most epic adventure yet. The team reunites to face a new formidable foe, Shadow, a mysterious hedgehog with powers unlike anything they've ever seen. Team Sonic must secure an unexpected alliance if they hope to stop Shadow and save the planet. Keanu Reeves joins the all-star cast as Shadow the Hedgehog.
James Marsden reprises his role as Tom, the adoptive father of Sonic, Knuckles and Tails. With the film now on Digital and coming soon to home entertainment formats, Marsden has been teasing what fans can expect.
On what life is like at Tom and Maddie’s house when we first see them in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3', Marsden shares:
“Over the course of the last two films, we've watched this evolution of the family dynamic, as Sonic continues to find his footing in life and gain his confidence in his friends. The first film was about him finding a place and a purpose, a sense of belonging somewhere – a family. The second was about him finding his buddies, his core group of friends. This one is more intense. The stakes and danger level are higher.”

Teasing that the danger level in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3' is higher than ever before, he explains, “In this one we see Sonic really growing into a teenager. Tom and Maddie are still parenting him, but it’s about how much do they allow him to do for himself? Sonic now is spreading his wings, and they are allowing him to have a longer leash, as they say, to make his own decisions and mistakes. This film is a little scarier because it's a little more dangerous. Tom and Maddie are no longer able to control the safety of their kids. They have to let them have the freedom to figure out life on their own. And that means that Sonic in this film has to learn how he can’t do everything on his own. We all have a bit of a dark side, have anger in us, and Tom and Maddie are trying to teach Sonic to not let those things define him or let them overcome him, because that's essentially what happened to Shadow.”
How are Tom and Maddie drawn into the action this time around? “Sonic is off trying to figure out who this new hedgehog is who is out there wreaking havoc around the world. He has assembled his buddies to go after him. And Tom and Maddie are at home making donut sweaters and doing jigsaw puzzles! Then Sonic returns through his portal and asks for their help. They jump at the chance to help him with his insane operation, to get decked out in all the gear and break into what is basically a fortress. They have to all use their different abilities to get in there.”
‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3′ is available to Buy on Digital from 24th February 2025, to rent from 10th March 2025 and to own on 4K UHD SteelBook, 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD from 14th April 2025.
