Sam Outlaw reveals new ‘anti-greatest hits’ album ‘The Nonessential’

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Sam Outlaw has announced his upcoming album, ‘The Nonessential,' set for release on March 24, 2025. Alongside the album announcement, Outlaw has dropped a brand-new single, ‘I Never Saw Him Cry', which is available now. This collection brings together some of his most impactful releases, alongside three previously unreleased tracks, offering a fresh perspective on his evolution as an artist.

Outlaw describes ‘The Nonessential' as his “anti-greatest-hits album,” compiling “orphaned” songs that never found a home on previous LPs or EPs. The twelve-track compilation has been remastered by GRAMMY-nominated engineer Pete Lyman (Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile, Sturgill Simpson) and features nine original singles and B-sides released since 2018.

A Return to Classic Country Roots

The album’s lead single, ‘I Never Saw Him Cry', was produced by Kelly Winrich (Delta Spirit) in San Clemente, CA, and mixed by Cheyenne Medders (Secret Sisters) in Nashville. The song sees Outlaw embracing his neo-traditionalist roots, channeling the pedal steel-laced country ballads of the ‘60s and ‘70s.

Reflecting on the track, Outlaw shared, “When I first fell in love with classic country, I used to put on albums by George Jones and Vern Gosdin and just cry, listening to their stories. I’m not always in the mood for a sad story, but there’s something so freeing about diving into the pain of an experience and channeling the heartache with music.”
