After seven years, The Devil Makes Three is back with their highly anticipated album ‘Spirits,' set for release on February 28, 2025, via New West Records. The 13-track record, produced by Ted Hutt (Dropkick Murphys, Old Crow Medicine Show), was recorded at Dreamland Recording Studios in Hurley, NY and marks a return to the band's stripped-down, roots-driven sound.
Frontman Pete Bernhard describes ‘Spirits' as a deeply personal album, influenced by themes of grief, mortality, and self-reflection. “There’s a theme of ghosts and death running through this album,” Bernhard explains, noting that he lost his mother, brother, and closest childhood friend during its creation. “The world’s in a strange place right now. A lot of the songs on this record come from that—dealing with loss, addiction, or the divisions we see every day. But at the end of the day, this band has always been about resilience.”
A Return to Their Signature Sound
Formed in 2002 in Santa Cruz, California, The Devil Makes Three has carved out a unique space where folk, blues, and punk energy collide. The band, originally founded by Bernhard and Cooper McBean, now features MorganEve Swain on upright bass and vocals, following the departure of Lucia Turino. ‘Spirits' embraces their raw, unfiltered musical roots while expanding their storytelling. The album’s title track, ‘Spirits,' encapsulates its emotional depth, with Bernhard describing it as a tribute to lost loved ones and an attempt to keep their memory alive through music.
