Prolific songwriter and artist Clever continues his evolution into the country music genre with the release of his latest single, ‘Cowboy Killers.' Now available on all streaming platforms, the track showcases Clever’s ability to blend raw emotion with vivid storytelling, a hallmark of his artistic journey.
Clever, who co-wrote ‘Cowboy Killers' with Sean Small and Sam Sumser, shared that the song was born out of a moment of exhaustion and determination. “This was the first time I got to write with Sean and Sam,” Clever recalls. “I had just finished a three-hour drive to Nashville, still wiped out from a long night on the road. I stepped out of a messy car that looked like I’d been living in it, feeling like I was on my own. Everything felt fresh and unfamiliar, but I was still here, chasing this dream, really just running on smoke.”
‘Cowboy Killers' follows Clever’s earlier country releases, ‘Candlelight' and ‘Sandcastles,' further solidifying his seamless transition into the genre. Despite his origins in hip-hop, Clever’s storytelling prowess has found a natural home in country music. Often described as “the music industry's best-kept secret” by Substream Magazine, Clever has earned the respect of industry heavyweights, including Justin Bieber, Post Malone, and Lil Wayne, who have all collaborated with him on previous projects.
Hailing from Gadsden, Alabama, Clever first made a name for himself with his brilliant wordplay and emotional depth, initially gaining recognition through rap battles. His 2021 sophomore album ‘Crazy' featured collaborations with artists like Lil Wayne, Post Malone, Juice WRLD, and Chris Brown, showcasing his versatility across genres. Justin Bieber once remarked on Clever’s work, saying, “You can feel emotion, just raw emotion, and I think it’s so powerful.”
Though his early career wasn’t rooted in country music, Clever’s recent foray into the genre feels like a natural progression. With deep roots in his Alabama hometown, he continues to craft meaningful stories, now through the lens of country music. “It doesn’t feel like a transition,” Clever says of his move into the country genre. “It feels like something I’ve always known.”
As Clever embarks on this new chapter of his career, his commitment to authentic songwriting remains unwavering, promising to draw in an even broader audience as he continues to evolve.
