Released last Friday, June 28, ‘Growin’ Up Country Vol. Two' is a charming collection of children’s songs brought to life by some of country music’s most talented artists and songwriters. Following the success of last year's inaugural volume, which was praised as a “heartwarming collection of music that’s perfect for the next generation of music lovers” by iHeartCountry, this new album promises to deliver the same catchy, family-friendly tunes that has families singing along together.
This sophomore instalment features an impressive lineup, including John Osborne of Brothers Osborne, Runaway June, Andrew Jannakos, Kelleigh Bannen and many more. Each artist brings their unique style and warmth to the project, creating a vibrant tapestry of sound that will delight both children and their parents. We spoke to producer and project orchestrator, Jaden Michaels about the project and her inspirations behind it.
You've now produced two volumes of the ‘Growing Up Country' project – what's your inspirations and mission statement behind the project?
I still can’t believe we are on Volume 2! I am so grateful to be a part of this project and even more thankful to the writers, musicians and artists who keep showing up wanting to join in on it. They are really a key part of where the inspiration and heart comes from. It’s been really special for me to see it come to life, and I hope it just continues to reach families and becomes a record that plays for years and years to come!
How do you go about choosing which artists to involve in the project?
It’s not hard to find incredible country artists. I have been so lucky to have artists I’ve reached out to or who have reached out to me wanting to be part of these records. I love that some are parents and others aren’t yet. Some are hit artists and others are up-and-coming. It’s nice to have a diverse range of artists.
Who writes the songs behind the project – the artists involved or outside writers?
It’s a mix of artists and songwriters. Nashville has so many incredible writers who bring something different to each session. It’s fun to see what we come up with and who it could work for on the record. Oftentimes, we’ll think of a specific artist and write a song with them in mind. I’m so happy with all the songs we’ve curated and picked for the record, and I’m excited for everyone to enjoy Volume 2!
You've really captured a great balance between positive messages, ‘get up and dance' songs and lullabies – what sort of bank of songs did you have to choose from and how carefully did you think about the selection process?
For each album, I put together a camp. We write two songs each day and try to write for different artists in mind. We want to make sure the songs are diverse and that there are a lot of options to pick from when we reach out to artists. We’ve been fortunate that most every song we’ve written has been recorded. It doesn’t feel like were chasing anything when we are writing; it’s just a good and genuine time writing for kids. It has been such a fun way to tap into my inner child!
Do you have ambitions for a volume 3 next year, maybe, or further down the line?
Of course! I’d love to keep the records coming and maybe even expand. Right now, I’m just the happiest that Volume 2 is done and ready for the world to hear!
You're a parent yourself. How important have you found music in the lives of your children and your family?
I am! I have two little girls. Music was always such a big part of my childhood. I wanted to make sure my kids had music that would inspire, affirm, teach them and also just let them have fun. It’s been a hit in out household for sure!
