First-look images have been released for the new production of Jesus Christ Superstar, starring Sam Ryder in the title role, as the iconic musical begins its run at the London Palladium.
The production, which marks Ryder’s stage debut, is now playing through to September 5, with an official opening night set for July 7. Due to demand, the show has already been extended, with a further 12-week run confirmed at Theatre Royal Drury Lane from October 16 through to January 9, 2027.

Ryder is joined by a standout cast including Tyrone Huntley as Judas Iscariot, Desmonda Cathabel as Mary Magdalene and David Thaxton as Pontius Pilate. One of the production’s most distinctive features is its rotating cast of King Herod, with performers including Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Richard Armitage, Boy George, Layton Williams and Julian Clary taking on the role during the Palladium run.
The production reunites the acclaimed creative team behind the celebrated 2016 staging, with direction from Tim Sheader, choreography by Olivier Award-winner Drew McOnie and design by Tom Scutt. Originally developed at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, the show returns in a new staging that builds on its award-winning legacy.
Following its London engagements, the production will embark on a UK tour from February through to October 2027, bringing the revival to audiences across the country.

Featuring music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, Jesus Christ Superstar remains one of the most enduring works in musical theatre. First released as a concept album before opening on Broadway in 1971, the show has since become a global phenomenon, with songs including “Gethsemane,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and “Superstar” continuing to resonate with audiences decades on.
Alongside the stage production, Ryder has also recorded new versions of “Gethsemane” and “What’s The Buzz?”, produced by Fraser T. Smith alongside Lloyd Webber and Ryder himself, offering a fresh take on some of the musical’s most iconic moments.
With a high-profile cast, a proven creative team and renewed momentum, this latest staging of Jesus Christ Superstar looks set to be one of the standout theatrical events of the year in London.
