“Telly Was Better Back Then”: Brits crown Grange Hill the greatest kids TV show of all time

There’s something about childhood television that lingers long after the credits roll—and for millions of Brits over 40, those memories are proving impossible to beat. A new survey of 2,000 people reveals a striking 83% believe children’s TV was better in their day, with iconic school drama Grange Hill topping the list as the nation’s most-loved throwback.

First airing in 1978, Grange Hill wasn’t just entertainment—it was a cultural institution. Across its 30-year run, the series tackled issues rarely seen in children’s programming at the time, from bullying and racism to drug use and knife crime. Storylines like the unforgettable “Just Say No” campaign embedded the show deep into the national consciousness, making it far more than just after-school viewing—it was a shared experience that shaped generations.

Hot on its heels is The Flintstones, the groundbreaking American animation that brought Bedrock to life and became the first primetime cartoon hit. Meanwhile, gentler British staples like Postman Pat and The Magic Roundabout continue to hold a special place in the nation’s heart, remembered for their warmth, simplicity and unmistakable charm.

Further down the list, nostalgia deepens with favourites like Danger Mouse, whose witty spy parody still resonates, and The Sooty Show, a masterclass in silent comedy and magic. Cult classic Bagpuss proves that even a short run can leave a lasting legacy, while Thomas the Tank Engine continues to chug along in the memories of those who grew up on the Island of Sodor.

And this isn’t just light nostalgia—it runs deeper. Nearly 40% of those surveyed say these shows represent some of their happiest childhood memories, while 43% believe programming from that era was more imaginative than what’s available today. In fact, a huge 94% would rather their children revisit these classics than spend hours scrolling online content, even though most acknowledge today’s generation has far more choice.

As Harriet Scott of Perspectus Global puts it, television once played a defining role in shaping childhoods—and its impact still echoes decades later. The ability to hum theme tunes from shows long off-air says it all: these weren’t just programmes, they were moments.
