Tedeschi Trucks Band has been wowing audiences since 2011 when they released their debut album ‘Revelator’. A band that is impossible to categorise, the 12-piece take elements of Rock, Country, Blues and Soul and put it into a melting pot that gives them a sound like no one else in music. Since 2011 the band, fronted by Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, has released a total of 5 studio albums and completed countless world tours. Four years on from 2022’s ‘I Am the Moon’, the band pushes the boundaries of what they’re known for on new album ‘Future Soul’.
Produced by Mike Elizondo with co-production from Derek Trucks, ‘Future Soul’ is a tight and lean 11-track record that spans 42 exhilarating minutes. Lead single ‘I Got You’ is probably one of the songs that sounds most like what you’d expect from the band. Susan Tedeschi’s vocals drive the upbeat soulful track, once again showcasing why she’s considered to be one of the greatest voices in modern music. Tedeschi has a gritty edge to her voice that’s deeply rooted in soul and honestly, she could sing the phone book and it’s something I’d listen to on repeat.
The album’s cover is a playful illustration that depicts Tedeschi and Trucks as superheroes, which seems pretty apt given they are legends in the music world. It also serves to support the narrative that ‘Future Soul’ is something different, and it prepares you for an exciting ride. Album opener “Crazy Cryin’” drags you straight in with a funky groove and Tedeschi’s immediately recognisable voice. The song is swampy, soulful and sets things up nicely for a record that leaves no time for the listener to catch their breath.
One of the album’s most interesting, and standout, tracks is ‘Hero’. Leaning into a ‘90s grunge sound, it’s a moment that’s quite surprising. The explosive chorus is a crescendo of crunching guitars, heavy drums and Tedeschi unleashing her voice like she’s singing for her life. It’s an epic and atmospheric moment that is going to be incredible live. Title track ‘Future Soul’ is another balls-to-the-wall moment driven by guitar riffs and an infectious energy. Hearing Tedeschi Trucks Band rocking out is always fun and this is among their best work.
There are some gentler moments on the record. The contemplative ‘Who I Am’ strips things back for a laidback soul moment that captures the joys of sharing your life with another person, while the acoustic-driven ‘What in the World’ is an example of how the band loses none of its power when they strip things back. ‘Under the Knife’ switches fears as band member Mike Mattison takes on vocal duties, with Tedeschi moving into the background. It serves to highlight the musicality and talent of the band – Mattison also co-wrote and/or wrote 6 tracks on the record.
As the album reaches the final stretch, the band digs into the blues on ‘Devil Be Gone’, harks back to a lazy 70s groove on the ethereal ‘Shout Out’ and closes things out with the luscious ‘Ride On’. Just in those three songs alone, the expansiveness of the band in terms of their musicality diversity is jaw-dropping.
Tedeschi Trucks Band continue to be one of the greatest bands in music. This could well be one of their best albums and fans will find plenty to love on ‘Future Soul’. Hearing this songs live will be special, and Tedeschi Trucks Band have created a whole heap of new material that can be added to their already expansive, and impressive, catalogue of music. ‘Future Soul’ is the kind of record that will live with you for years, and you might just find it becomes one of your favourite albums.
