Demon Records are delving into the BBC archives with a beautifully-presented 3LP release of ‘Doctor Who: The Wheel in Space', one of the Second Doctor’s “lost” stories and his third of four battles against the dreaded Cybermen. Originally broadcast in 1968, it stars Patrick Troughton as the Doctor.
Only two episodes of the six-part serial survive on film, but the entire story was preserved as sound recordings taken off-air at the time of broadcast. These rare audio survivals, complete with incidental music and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop’s legendary theme, have been restored to create its first vinyl release.
The set features linking narration by Wendy Padbury, who joined the iconic science-fiction series in this very story as astrophysicist Zoe Herriot. The Doctor and Jamie find themselves rescued by the crew of the Wheel, an isolated space station orbiting Earth, only to uncover a sinister plot by the Cybermen, who plan to use the station as a bridgehead for an invasion. Alongside the metallic monsters are the unnervingly skittering Cybermats — small, lethal cybernetic creatures seen previously in ‘The Tomb of the Cybermen'.
Though scripted by David Whitaker, the tale was based on a storyline by Kit Pedler, co-creator of the Cybermen and often referred to as the programme’s “scientific adviser”.
The set comes on three striking “Bernalium Blue” discs, a neat nod to the fictional metal in the story, housed in retro-styled inner sleeves designed to evoke 1960s TV listings guides.
Demon Records’ 3LP edition offers the most immersive way yet to experience this atmospheric slice of 1960s sci-fi, wrapped in stylish packaging that celebrates its vintage origins. ‘Doctor Who: The Wheel in Space' is added to Demon Records' growing range of ‘Doctor Who' titles on February 13th 2026.
