Find out the best and worst Christmas markets in the UK

A new analysis has revealed the UK’s best and worst-rated Christmas markets, with Canterbury Christmas Market taking the top spot and Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market ranking as the lowest-rated. The research, conducted by QR Code Generator, analysed Tripadvisor ratings for Christmas markets across the country to uncover which festive events delighted visitors the most – and which left them disappointed.

Canterbury Christmas Market was crowned the nation’s favourite, with 51.6% of visitors awarding it a 5-star rating. Taking over three locations in the Kent city from November 12, the market’s festive charm and community atmosphere have clearly struck a chord with visitors. Close behind in second place is Chester Christmas Market, which runs in Town Hall Square from November 19 to December 22, and earned 41.9% 5-star reviews.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, one of the UK’s most iconic festive events, ranks third, with 32.8% of visitors leaving 5-star ratings. With more than 6,000 Tripadvisor reviews, the ticketed London event remains the country’s most-reviewed Christmas market. Bath Christmas Market, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, comes in fourth with 30.8% of 5-star ratings, while Lincoln Christmas Market – which was last held in 2022 – rounds out the top five with 27.7%.

At the other end of the scale, Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market ranks as the UK’s lowest-rated, with a striking 61.3% of reviews giving it just 1-star. Despite offering traditional German-style stalls and daily live music, many visitors were left underwhelmed. Edinburgh Christmas Market follows in second place for the lowest-rated events, with 49.9% of visitors awarding it 1-star, while Liverpool (41.2%), Manchester (38.4%) and York (33.3%) complete the bottom five.

According to QR Code Generator’s analysis, Christmas markets in larger cities appear to fare worse overall, potentially due to higher visitor expectations and the challenges of managing larger crowds. “According to visitors, Christmas markets in major cities appear to be some of the most disappointing,” explained Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator PRO S.L. “However, this could be for a variety of reasons – from overcrowding to inflated expectations. Interestingly, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland bucks this trend, remaining one of the most iconic and highly rated festive events in the UK.”

The findings also suggest that visitors may prefer smaller, more traditional Christmas markets to the larger-scale city events. “Overall, visitors seem to enjoy smaller, charming markets over the big events,” Porcar added, highlighting Canterbury and Chester as prime examples of markets that successfully combine festive atmosphere with visitor satisfaction.

With the festive season fast approaching, the research offers a valuable guide for those planning their Christmas market visits this year. Whether you’re seeking the cozy charm of Canterbury or the dazzling spectacle of Hyde Park, the UK’s Christmas markets promise to deliver a dose of holiday spirit – though, as the rankings reveal, some do it better than others.
