Looking for new headphones? You’ll need plenty of time and a discerning eye as there are so many options on the market. It’s near impossible to tell what’s value for money and what’s not these days. One brand that has been climbing its way into the public’s conscious is Canyon. Their range of budget products aim to bring impressive quality at a more affordable cost than many of their competitors. While Apple’s AirPods Max are without a doubt the best noise cancelling headphones on the market, they come with a hefty £500 price point. Can Canyon’s OnRiff ANC come anywhere close at only £37?
On first inspection the headphones are impressive. They are light-weight and foldable, making them very easy to transport. Set-up is a doddle – you literally turn them on and they pair quickly with your chosen device. The headphones can connect to two different devices at the same time, which is a nice plus, and they’re very comfortable to wear. Thanks to how light they are, they don’t crush your ears and you could happily wear them for hours.
How do they sound though? For the price point, the sound is very good. The box says the headphones offer deep bass, and they certainly do. I gave them a good test with different types of music – some R&B from Kehlani, dance music from Demi Lovato and acoustic folk from Jewel. The sound is surprisingly deep and you can hear all of the intricacies you’d want to hear in this high0quality audio world that we live in. The volume can be turned up pretty loud and I could find little to fault with how they sounded. Boasting up to 25 hours of playtime, they are a good choice for people who practically live in their headphones.
The active noise cancellation (ANC) is a little disappointing. Honestly, I couldn’t tell much difference when I activated it. I could still hear my husband talking on the phone in another room of the house and when the music wasn’t playing, I could still hear my dog snoring on the sofa at the other side of the room. Compare that to Apple’s AirPods Max and there’s no competition. While I didn’t expect the headphones to be as effective as Apple’s, I expected there to be at least some difference when activating the ANC mode.
The headphones are packaged with a USB-C cable to charge them and a 3.5mm minijack, if you want to plug them into a traditional Walkman or discman. That makes the headphones versatile and a good choice for anyone who wants to use them with multiple devices. If you’re after a set of headphones for gaming, these ones offer low latency so they are a perfect choice.
The Canyon Over-Ear Headphones OnRiff 6 ANC are a lightweight pair of headphones that boast impressive sound quality, but as active noise cancelling headphones they fall way short of expectations. At £37 they are still a decent investment if you’re looking for decent quality on a budget but if the active noise cancellation is your primary concern, there are much better options available. Had the active noise cancellation been effective, these would have been a fantastic choice for a stocking filler this Christmas.
