Vince Gill marks 30 years of ‘Go Rest High On That Mountain’ with new verse

Vince Gill’s landmark song ‘Go Rest High On That Mountain' is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a new extended version featuring an additional verse. First released on August 28, 1995, the track has become one of country music’s most enduring works, earning RIAA double-platinum certification and touching listeners across generations.

The song, originally inspired by the death of Gill’s friend Keith Whitley and later completed following the passing of his brother Bob in 1993, has long stood as one of his most personal and powerful compositions. In 1996, it won two Grammy Awards for Best Male Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song, as well as CMA Song of the Year. The following year, BMI honored it as the Most Performed Song.

Gill first revealed the new verse in 2019 during his Christmas at the Ryman shows with wife Amy Grant, sharing that he had always felt something was missing. “The last thirty years I've always felt like something was missing from this song,” he explained. “With this new third verse I finally feel like the song is complete.” For the updated version, Gill returned to the original recording, adding only his fresh vocals for the new section.

The milestone release will be given a high-profile moment on Sunday, September 14, when Gill joins Lainey Wilson for a performance of ‘Go Rest High On That Mountain' during the In Memoriam segment of the 77th Emmy Awards on CBS.
