Review: HARDY’s ‘COUNTRY!’ EP reimagines the southern songbook with grit, humour and heart

HARDY, born Michael Wilson Hardy, began his music career as a behind-the-scenes powerhouse in Nashville, gaining recognition for his songwriting talent before stepping into the spotlight as an artist. Originally from Philadelphia, Mississippi, HARDY studied songwriting at Middle Tennessee State University, where he honed his craft before penning hits for major country acts like Florida Georgia Line, Morgan Wallen, Blake Shelton, and Chris Lane. His sharp lyrical voice and knack for storytelling quickly earned him a place among Nashville’s elite songwriters. His early success culminated in co-writing Wallen’s record-breaking ‘Up Down' and Blake Shelton’s ‘God’s Country,' showcasing his ability to craft radio-ready anthems with a gritty edge.

As a solo artist, HARDY has carved out a distinctive lane by fusing country’s narrative depth with the aggression and energy of heavy rock and metal. He fully embraced this hybrid approach with 2020’s ‘A ROCK,' which pushed genre boundaries while maintaining commercial appeal. His artistic vision reached new extremes with the release of ‘the mockingbird & THE CROW' in 2023, a dual-genre album split between country ballads and blistering metal tracks. In 2024, HARDY doubled down on his rock sensibilities with ‘QUIT!,' a full-blown heavy rock metal album that cemented his versatility and refusal to be confined by traditional genre labels. The project highlights his evolution from a country songwriter into one of the most genre-fluid voices in modern music.

Here we are now in 2025 and HARDY has returned to the Country fold with the release of new five-track EP ‘Country!' The title says it all and perhaps gives a little insight into the careful yet blatantly obvious branding that has to happen with such a fluid and amorphous artists like HARDY!

With Country!, HARDY continues to stake his claim as one of country music’s most inventive songwriters, offering a six-track EP that breathes fresh life into classic themes of heartbreak, tradition, loyalty, and southern pride. Across each song, he balances clever lyricism with real emotional weight, tying it all together with a sonic palette that swings from acoustic tenderness to arena-ready blasts of heavy guitars. It’s a collection that feels rooted in tradition but unafraid to stretch boundaries—a true showcase of HARDY’s growing mastery.

The EP opens with ‘Buck on the Wall,' a tribute to HARDY’s late grandfather and a celebration of legacy and rural grit. Over sturdy, chugging country guitars, HARDY paints a picture of a home “it ain't much to look, but if you look inside,” where memories linger in antlers mounted on the wall. “It hurts me like hell that he won't get to see it,” he admits, pledging to shoot a buck of his own in tribute. That mix of nostalgia, pride, and generational respect sets the tone for the record. ‘Car That Drove You Away,' meanwhile, shifts the mood into soft, acoustic heartbreak. In a clever lyrical twist, HARDY imagines himself as the physical objects that might have stayed close to the girl who left him: “If I was the car that drove you away,” “the light in town,” “the drink in your hand,” “the band in the bar.” It’s a fresh take on the well-worn country theme of regret, dressed in lilting melodies and bittersweet reflection.

‘Girl With a Gun' is where HARDY’s wit and songwriting chops truly shine. What starts as a tender pledge of fidelity turns into a hilarious, high-stakes warning: “I couldn’t ‘cause I love you and I wouldn’t because I ain’t that dumb… to cheat on a girl with a gun.” It erupts into a full-band frenzy midway through, with a massive guitar solo and pounding drums before returning to its stripped-back roots. The humour never undercuts the sincerity—instead, it adds punch to a song about commitment.

‘Luckiest Man Alive' offers some of the EP’s breeziest vibes, a rural gratitude anthem filled with charm. “I ain't got nothing to complain about… living out ‘Country Boy Can Survive,'” HARDY sings with a wink, delivering a list of life’s simple joys over a feel-good, 90s-style groove that feels like Luke Combs meets early 2000s radio country.

Closing track ‘Favourite Country Song' wraps everything up with a celebration of the very music and lifestyle HARDY clearly holds dear. Name-checking classics from ‘Chicken Fried' to ‘Sinners Like Me,' he ultimately decides nothing beats the sound of the real south: “Crickets, hound dogs, skillets, John Deere vehicles, raindrops on tin roofs and creek beds.” A marching drumbeat adds a sense of forward motion, while the lively guitars make you want to sing along with every word. It’s both an ode to the genre and a subtle redefining of it at the same time.

Through ‘Country!' HARDY takes familiar country imagery—front porches, lost loves, family bonds—and retools them with sharp, modern writing and dynamic production. Each track stands on its own, but together, they form a cohesive portrait of life in the south, told by a songwriter who knows every backroad and barstool of the landscape. With this EP, HARDY reminds us that country music, when done right, can still surprise, entertain, and move us—all in one breath.
