Making the Most of Your Days: Here’s How

Life goes quickly, to put it simply. Days can fly by, and then you wonder where the week went.

Whether it’s the weekend, a time when you’re not at the office, or a moment when you want to be more present in how you live, the following suggestions can be helpful. Maximizing life helps you make the most of the precious daily moments.

It can mean having a stronger sense of purpose, for example. Or feeling calmer. Maybe you are looking for ways to be extra productive, want more fun in your week, or something else. Let’s look at suggestions.

Improve Your Morning

Adjusting your activities in the morning can set the tone for the whole day ahead. With some structure, you can efficiently get through the must-do tasks and then have more time to relax after. While you might be thinking about how you have trouble waking up when your alarm clock sounds, getting out of bed is easier when you consider that we only have one today.

A more productive morning can include waking up an hour earlier than usual. That gives you time to relax with a cuppa for a half hour or so and wake up before starting your to-do list. This quiet time for yourself can help you recharge if you were extra busy yesterday.

Now that you’re out of bed, how about having a glass of water? Hydrating the body is a great way to begin the day. You may have gotten dehydrated overnight, and also water can help improve metabolism for potential weight loss.

During your peaceful morning, you might practice mindfulness or try to centre yourself. When you quiet the noise in your head, you may find that leads to clearer thinking later in the day. Be sure to eat breakfast around this time, too, so that you have the energy to go about the tasks you need to do within the coming hours.

Put Thought into How You Prioritize Tasks

There’s a lot of activities to do today, but don’t let that overwhelm you. Instead, prioritize what is ahead. Doing so can help you make the most of the day. The secret? Having a clear plan. Sticking to your list of what to do in what order can also help prevent distraction.

The next question is, how do you prioritize? There’s a method called the Eisenhower Matrix that some people might find useful, so it could be something you try soon. In its most basic sense, this approach involves dividing activities you have do into four groups. They are: urgent and important, urgent and unimportant, important but not urgent, and not urgent or important. The ideal order to do them in would be in the order they were described in that last sentence, as the most urgent would be done first.

Other people find it helpful to prioritize tasks according to what takes the least amount of time. So, the shortest ones to complete are those that you do first. There can be great satisfaction in crossing items off your list as you accomplish them in the earlier part of the day.

Another way to prioritize tasks to have a more productive day is to do the most complex or difficult items first while the mind is fresh. As the day goes on, you might get tired physically or mentally (or both), so this strategy can work for some folks. Tackling the most complicated project first can feel great, too, giving you the confidence to carry through into your afternoon and evening.

Set Aside Time for What Matters to You

It’s easy to lose sight of what is most important in life when in the go-go-go lifestyle that so many of us have. But you can still get to what you want to do and what’s most important to you by blocking time in your day.

As its name suggests, time blocking involves setting aside blocks of time. To maximize your days, this method can be helpful when you fill these periods of time with activities that have set purposes.

While you might think immediately about how you set aside certain times for medical appointments or pick up your child after school, you can also block periods when you want to have fun. Schedule it!

By the way, the activity doesn’t have to be an expensive one, and you don’t even have to leave the house. It could be a one-hour bubble bath in the early evening, for example, for self-care. Once it’s on the schedule, don’t be tempted to move it for a work-related activity or another type of obligation.

What about Multitasking?

You may have noticed that multitasking has not been talked about yet. That’s because it’s actually not productive for many people. That might surprise you, but it makes sense when given some more thought. You’re likely not able to do more, which goes against the whole reason to multitask in the first place.

Dividing your focus between several tasks can lower efficiency rather than increasing it. The mind is busy and unfocused, so it can take more time to complete a project.

Being more efficient, on the other hand, can come from focusing on one task for a longer time. You may find that you’re able to accomplish more in your workday, for example.

Engage Your Senses Fully

Actively engaging your senses is something that is often taken for granted. Yet, it can bring a more satisfying and meaningful experience by doing so when you find something you like. That involves giving more attention than you might normally do to what you see, taste, touch, smell, and hear.

If you’re not sure how to maximize your senses, let’s go through each one and offer some examples. While not every single one will suit you, some might! Let’s start with sight. Take the time to look around on a walk and appreciate the beauty of flowers, trees, and other parts of nature. You might also go to a museum and admire the artwork on display there.

When it comes to your sense of touch, there are a range of tactile experiences, such as holding a cuppa and feeling its warmth in your hands. Giving someone a hug is also a wonderful example, and it can deepen your bond with a friend or partner.

Try eating slower than usual to enjoy more flavour than you might usually get in meals as part of developing your sense of taste, and focus on what you’re consuming with each mouthful rather than mindlessly eating while watching the telly. You can also mix flavours like mint, berry, or others, depending on what you prefer each day, and save money with TwoWombats’ refer-a-friend scheme on your favourite pouches.

As for hearing, your senses can come alive by listening to different genres of music, which can affect your mood, potentially boosting it on a tough day. Audiobooks can also give your eyes a break as you listen intently to the plot of a book. Finally, use your nose more by getting a bouquet of fresh flowers to put by your office desk or lighting a candle that has a calming scent.

Keep Challenging Yourself

Continuing to learn and grow is important. It is part of developing your personality and strengthening your values. You are never too old to learn more about yourself or the surrounding world.

It can be fun and also stretch your boundaries. Trying new things can take you into situations where you never thought you could excel. That can boost confidence.

For instance, you might be nervous about public speaking but find that you are able to give a great speech to a room full of people when you practice for a while beforehand. The satisfaction of doing this task can carry through to other parts of your life, from work to home life.

Are you wondering how to find a challenge? It could be starting a new hobby, taking a class in public speaking, or going to a social event when you’re an introvert.

Maximizing Your Day Starts Now

Why wait for another day to pass? Making the most of today sounds like a great thing – And it is! The suggestions above are ones that you start to do if they appeal to you.

Of course, there are other suggestions, too. For example, get physically active if you find that hasn’t been something you’ve done lately. It could help you have more energy, which can go far in making the most of your days.

Another idea is to put down your smartphone when you’re around loved ones. That can help you focus on having fun with them in the present moment. You may also look for ways to practice gratitude to help uplift your spirits, such as keeping a gratitude journal and writing in it each evening.

Living fully can take some effort to start, but it can quickly become a more natural approach over time. For instance, meditation could be something that you include in your daily lifestyle, even for five minutes. Cheers to making more of the moments we have!
