Record Story Day (#RSD2025 #recordstoreday) is coming on Saturday 12th April 2025. Demon Music Group has announced that among its releases will be the celebrated 1966 ‘Doctor Who' story ‘The Tenth Planet' featuring original Doctor William Hartnell. ‘The Tenth Planet' is set to be released on collectible limited edition double 140g White and Silver vinyl. Linking narration is provided by original companion Polly actress Anneke Wills.
The serial is a crucial part of ‘Doctor Who' lore. It is notable for:
- First Appearance of the Cybermen – one of the most iconic villains, second only to the Daleks. Their original design featured cloth faces, sing-song voices, and exposed hands.
- The First Doctor’s Final Story – William Hartnell’s health had been deteriorating, making it difficult for the actor to continue in the role.
- First Ever Regeneration – The final moments of Episode 4 feature the Doctor regenerating for the first time, marking the birth of the show’s unique concept as Patrick Troughton took over the lead role.
- Influence of the Space Race – The story reflects 1960s anxieties about space exploration, featuring a doomed space mission and an Arctic base monitoring extraterrestrial threats.
- Hartnell’s Absence in Episode 3 – Due to illness, William Hartnell did not appear in Episode 3, and his character was said to be resting off-screen.
- The “Tenth Planet” Concept – The plot revolves around Mondas, Earth’s twin planet, which returns to drain energy from Earth. This idea of a hidden twin planet remains a popular sci-fi trope.
- Regeneration Scene Recovered – Although Episode 4 is missing, the actual regeneration scene survived thanks to an amateur recording of the television broadcast.
