Review: Erin Kinsey ignites on new ‘Getting Away With It’ EP

Erin Kinsey, a rising country artist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, signed with RECORDS Nashville, a division of Barry Weiss’s joint venture with Sony Music, in 2021. Since then, she has released two EPs and multiple hit singles, garnering over 110 million streams. Kinsey plays seven instruments, including guitar, banjo, drums, and piano. As a songwriter, she co-wrote ‘Pink,' a charity single recorded by Dolly Parton and others, benefiting Susan G. Komen® for breast cancer awareness but it is on new EP ‘Getting Away With It' that it feels she is really beginning to come into her own as a multi-faceted and talented artist.

‘Gettin' Away With It' follows on from viral hits like ‘I Ain’t Crazy' and ‘Matchmaker' which will also be featured on the EP. All co-written by Kinsey, they share a more personal side of the 23 year-old artist, who has some life under her belt since her last EP, and is ready to spill on her experiences.

“I think ‘Gettin' Away With It' is a cool title for the project because it is symbolic of my relationship to my music,” Kinsey believes, “I feel like I am able to say what I want to say, wear what I want to wear, and most importantly be myself. I feel like I am ‘getting away with it’ and the process should be harder, but people are relating to the songs and I think it is because they are coming from a genuine place.”

It only takes one listen to see that ‘Getting Away With It' is a bold, fiery showcase of female empowerment and personal reflection, blending country roots with a modern pop sheen and rock influences. Across its eight tracks, Kinsey deftly balances fierce independence with emotional vulnerability, delivering an album that cements her as one of Nashville’s rising stars.

The opening track ‘Matchmaker' kicks things off with a funky beat and a tale of tangled friendships and betrayal. It’s a Carrie Underwood-esque story of an ex who ends up with her best friend, delivered with a catchy, biting chorus. The song’s clever lyrics, especially the line “I hope when they bring up how it started, they give credit where credit’s due,” set the tone for the album’s unapologetic attitude.

‘I Ain’t Crazy' follows with a mix of funky guitar lines and a propulsive drumbeat. Kinsey lays it all out in this anthem of self-discovery, exploding in the chorus as she uncovers the truth about a cheating partner. It’s a hard-hitting song with a mix of Carrie Underwood and Lauren Alaina vibes, showcasing rollicking guitar and banjo work that adds to the raw emotion.

On ‘Best of My 20s' Kinsey slows things down for a more atmospheric ballad featuring Trousdale. The Taylor Swift-inspired duet reflects on a toxic relationship, where Kinsey laments, “You got the best of my 20s but brought out the worst in me.” The song’s crossover appeal, highlighted by slick production and heartfelt vocals, makes it one of the album’s standout moments.

‘Tabs on Me' brings back the funk with a bombastic chorus, big guitar lines, and Kinsey’s fiery attitude. Another song about a toxic, controlling relationship, it radiates with energy and live-show appeal. Kinsey’s vocal power shines through, especially when she cheekily concludes, “I mean, it’s kinda sweet!”

The title track, ‘Getting Away With It,' showcases Kinsey’s ability to craft empowering narratives with a fresh twist. Written about her younger sister, the song explores the idea of a girl using her charm and femininity to get what she wants. “She’s every girl’s friend, she’s every man’s type,” Kinsey sings over the searing guitars. With a huge chorus, it’s an anthem of self-confidence, layered with humour and heart. “If I didn’t love her so much, it would be so hard to like her,” Kinsey says about her sister, the subject of the song!

‘Wild' continues the album’s empowering themes, this time with a rebellious love story that shocks a small town. Co-written with Sarah Buxton and Josh Kerr, it’s an infectious track with a hypnotic chorus, elevated by loud rock guitars and a fierce melody that captures Kinsey’s free-spirited nature. Similarly, in ‘Trouble,' Kinsey turns up the heat with an uptempo, fiddle-driven song about the allure of danger. The best chorus on the album barrels along with pounding drums and Kinsey’s vocals at full throttle, as she sings about a man who “looks like trouble” with undeniable charm.

The album closes on a high note with ‘No Fences,' a smooth, atmospheric track that celebrates freedom and self-determination. With its banjo and guitar-laced chorus, Kinsey declares, “I’m a mustang, I’m a freight train,” capturing the essence of the album’s recurring themes of empowerment and independence.

Overall, ‘Getting Away With It' is a rollicking, fierce project that showcases Erin Kinsey’s vocal prowess, lyrical creativity, and ability to craft bombastic, memorable choruses. Full of fire, determination, and a healthy dose of fun, this album is a statement piece that will solidify Kinsey’s place in both Nashville and the broader country music scene.
