Nate Smith & Avril Lavigne team up for heartfelt new ballad ‘Can You Die From A Broken Heart’

Rising country star Nate Smith, the ACM New Male Artist of the Year, and diamond-certified pop-rock legend Avril Lavigne have reunited to release a poignant new ballad, ‘Can You Die From A Broken Heart.' Following their powerful collaboration on ‘Bulletproof' at the 2024 ACM Awards, the duo delivers another emotionally charged track that delves deep into heartbreak and loss. The song, written by Kevin Fisher, Michael Matosic, and Tom Walker, and produced by Lindsay Rimes, is now available.

The track showcases both Smith’s soulful country style and Lavigne’s signature vocal intensity, blending their voices in a raw and powerful way. ‘Can You Die From A Broken Heart' is also set to be part of Smith’s upcoming sophomore album ‘California Gold' releasing on October 4th. We've heard an advance of the album and can confidently tell you it's a big, bombastic slice of Country which finds Smith really digging into his 90s rock influences.

“Getting the chance to work with one of your all-time favorite singers twice is humbling,” Smith shared. “Avril is an absolute powerhouse, and this song is everything a heartbreak ballad should feel like. The bridge is my favorite part – it’s so epic and even gives a slight nod to ‘I’m With You,’ which is my favorite Avril song. I think this track will touch hearts in a meaningful way.”

Lavigne, who has embraced country collaborations in recent years, expressed her enthusiasm for working with Smith again. “I’ve always been a fan of country music, and Nate is such a talented artist,” she said. “Our performance of ‘Bulletproof’ at the ACMs was a blast, and I knew I wanted to work with him again. ‘Can You Die From A Broken Heart’ is an intense ballad that will resonate deeply with people.”

The release of ‘Can You Die From A Broken Heart' adds to an already stellar year for Smith. His upcoming album California Gold will feature 16 tracks, including fan-favourites ‘Fix What You Didn’t Break' and ‘Wish I Never Felt,' as well as collaborations like ‘I Like It' with Alesso, which has already garnered over 120 million global streams. The album also includes his platinum-certified hit ‘Bulletproof,' which became Smith’s third consecutive multi-week No. 1 on the Mediabase chart, setting a new record for the most consecutive multi-week No. 1s to start a career in R&R/Mediabase history.

Fans will also have a chance to see Smith live during his Through The Smoke headline fall tour, which kicked off on September 19th in Portland, OR, and wraps up in Nashville, TN, on December 5th. Smith will also perform at Amazon Music’s City Sessions on October 3rd, giving fans an exclusive chance to hear tracks from California Gold in an intimate live-streamed performance. Only yesterday it was announced that Smith will be performing as support to Cody Johnson at next year's C2C festival in London, Belfast and Glasgow.
