Dierks Bentley covers Tom Petty’s ‘American Girl’ on upcoming tribute album

Country music luminary Dierks Bentley adds his unique spin to the timeless classic ‘American Girl’ by Tom Petty, infusing it with a free-spirited bluegrass flair. Released now via Big Machine Records/The Valory Music Co., Bentley’s rendition of the iconic track is part of the upcoming Tom Petty tribute album, ‘Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty’ a collaborative effort between Big Machine Records and the Tom Petty Estate. This project unites top Country and Americana artists to honour Petty’s enduring musical legacy.

Reflecting on the song, Bentley shares, “Petty’s southern roots shined through across his songwriting and storytelling. He might not have ever been considered as Country but you can’t go into a bar in Nashville without hearing this song.” Bentley’s rendition captures the essence of the original while infusing it with his own distinctive style, creating a heartfelt homage to Petty’s enduring impact on American music.

Bentley’s take on ‘American Girl’ showcases a festival of swirling fiddles, banjo-forward melodies, and soulful vocals, expertly arranged by producer Jon Randall. With a lineup of acclaimed session musicians including Chad Cromwell, Craig Young, and Rob McNelley, Bentley’s rendition breathes new life into Petty’s classic, embodying the spirit of American roots music with pride and defiance. Fans can now experience Bentley’s heartfelt tribute to one of rock’s greatest hits, celebrating the legacy of Tom Petty in true Country style.
