“Grey’s Anatomy” fans received a surprise yesterday when it was confirmed that Jessica Capshaw would be returning to the long-running medical drama for its upcoming twentieth season.
Last seen in the season 14 finale, Capshaw’s character Dr. Arizona Robbins reunited with her estranged wife Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez). With Arizona’s return, and confirmation that Dr. Nico Kim (Alex Landi) is scrubbing back in too, we’ve started thinking about who else we’d like back on the show.

1. Dr. Izzie Stevens
A lot drama surrounded the exit of Katherine Heigl as Dr. Izzie Stevens, which she addressed more recently in a conversation with former co-star Ellen Pompeo. A fan favourite during the early seasons of the show, Heigl departed from the show in the middle of season 6. Heigl wasn’t even brought back when Izzie featured heavily in Alex Karev’s (Justin Chamber) exit! With Heigl having recently reunited with her former co-stars at the Emmys, maybe the way has finally been paved for her to return?
2. Dr. Alex Karev
Another abrupt exit was that of Justin Chambers who played Dr. Alex Karev for 16 seasons. When Chambers departed the show, his exit was hastily written and he left his wife Jo (Camilla Luddington) to reunite with Izzie. Viewers didn’t quite buy it and it all felt a bit random and rushed. If Izzie came back to the show, Alex should too. Imagine the drama it would create for Jo!
3. Dr. Cristina Yang
This one is a pipe dream but getting Sandra Oh back as Dr. Cristina Yang would be a real coup for the show. It’s been 10 seasons since we last saw her on the show, although she’s been mentioned quite a few times over the years. Yang is one of the most popular characters that’s ever been on the show and there’s never been anyone quite like her. We’d even settle for a cameo when the final season arrives (whenever that may be).
4. Dr. Callie Torres
With Arizona on her way back to Seattle, wouldn’t it be nice to see Sara Ramirez back as Callie. No longer a cast member on ‘And Just Like That…’, Ramirez would be welcomed back to “Grey’s Anatomy” we’re sure. We want to know how Callie and Arizona have been getting on. Fans would go wild to have one of the show’s most popular couples back. We also need proper closure for the character as her departure was explained away in season 13 with no real send-off.
5. Dr. April Kepner
Sarah Drew has been back to “Grey’s” a couple of times since departing in season 14. Dr. April Kepner started off as a character fans hated but over the years she became a firm favourite. Honestly, we’re still baffled why the character was written off in the first place. We know that April is back with Jackson (Jesse Williams) now, and we don’t want them breaking up again, but it would be nice to have her back on the show.
