‘La Traviata’ and ‘Carmen’ operas come to the Churchill Theatre, Bromley

Renowned producer Ellen Kent is set to bring two shows to the stage at Bromley’s Churchill Theatre in Spring 2024, with the Ukrainian Opera & Ballet Theatre Kyiv. Prepare to be captivated by two classical masterpieces: Verdi’s La Traviata on Wednesday, January 24th, and Bizet’s Carmen on Thursday, January 25th.

Verdi’s La Traviata unfolds the poignant narrative of searing passion and unforgettable melodies. This interpretation of the 19th-century love saga, La Dame aux Camelias, mirrors Verdi’s own life. The opera delves into the passionate affairs and life of Violetta, a consumptive courtesan. Featuring iconic pieces like the ‘Brindisi’ and Violetta’s haunting aria ‘Addio Del Passato,’ this production, directed by Ellen Kent, stars Korean soprano Elena Dee and Ukrainian soprano Alyona Kistenyova. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.

The masterpiece Carmen by Bizet promises an evening of passion, sexual jealousy, and unforgettable arias. The bewitching gypsy girl, Carmen, lures a soldier to desertion and meets her tragic end. The opera showcases evocative melodies like ‘The Habanera’ and ‘The Toreador’s Song.’ Ellen Kent’s direction brings to life the stunning set, reflecting Seville’s magnificent architecture. Ukrainian mezzo-sopranos Natalia Matveeva and Irina Sproglis take centre stage in this French opera, sung with English subtitles. Don’t miss this theatrical experience created by Ellen Kent, featuring sets crafted by Setup Scenery, known for their work with the Royal Opera Covent Garden.
