‘Outlander’ renewed for eighth and final season and prequel series announced

‘Outlander’ has been renewed for an eighth and final season it has been announced by Lionsgate+.

The eighth season of the flagship series, ‘Outlander’ will consist of ten episodes, following an extended 16-episode seventh season, which is currently filming in Scotland and will air this summer.Ā

‘Outlander’ stars CaitrĆona Balfe as ā€œClaire Fraser,ā€ Sam Heughan as ā€œJamie Fraser,ā€ Sophie Skelton as ā€œBrianna MacKenzie,ā€ Richard Rankin as ā€œRoger MacKenzie,ā€ John Bell as ā€œYoung Ian,ā€ David Berry as ā€œLord John Grey,ā€ Caitlin Oā€™Ryan as ā€œLizzie Beardsley,ā€ Paul Gorman as ā€œJosiah Beardsleyā€ and ā€œKeziah Beardsley,ā€ and newcomers Charles Vandervaart as ā€œWilliam Ransom,ā€ Izzy Meikle-Small as ā€œRachel Hunterā€ and Joey Phillips as ā€œDenzell Hunter.ā€

‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’, a prequel series from Matthew B. Roberts, Ronald D. Moore and Maril Davis, has been greenlit and will be a Lionsgate+ Original Series. The 10-episode prequel series will centreĀ on the lives and relationship of Jamie Fraserā€™s parents, Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie.Ā

ā€œBlood of My Blood”Ā is, at its heart, a love story. It will explore what lengths a person will go to find love in a time when love is considered a luxury, and when marriages are made strategically, often for political or financial gain,ā€ says Matthew B. Roberts, Showrunner and Executive Producer.

He continues, ā€œThe title is a nod to Jamie Fraserā€™s marriage vow to Claire and there will be several names and faces that ā€˜Outlanderā€™ fans will know and recognize. Jamie and Claireā€™s TV story may be coming to an end with Season Eight, but Diana is continuing on with their literary journey in her wonderful book series and is working diligently on Book Ten. With Jamie and Claire, and now Brian and Ellen, there is still so much more to come in the ā€˜Outlanderā€™ universe, and we cannot wait to continue sharing these stories with our dedicated fans.ā€

ā€œFor nearly a decade ā€˜Outlanderā€™ has won the hearts of audiences worldwide and weā€™re pleased to bring Claire and Jamieā€™s epic love story to a proper conclusion,ā€ said Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming for STARZ. ā€œBut before we close this chapter there is plenty of their passionate story to tell over the course of 26 new episodes and even more to explore of this dynamic world and its origin story. Weā€™re thrilled to continue to partner with Matthew, Maril and Ronald and canā€™t wait to see where their alluring storytelling takes us next.ā€

‘Outlander’ Showrunner and Executive Producer Matthew B. Roberts is signed on to write ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ and will also serve as showrunner and executive producer of the prequel series.

In addition to Roberts, Ronald D. Moore will also executive produce the prequel along with Maril Davis. Moore and Davis developed ‘Outlander’ for television, under their production banner Tall Ship Productions. Story Mining & Supply Company will also executive produce, and Diana Gabaldon will serve as a consulting producer.

‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ will be produced by Sony Pictures Television. STARZā€™s Executive Vice President of Original Programming, Karen Bailey, will oversee the prequel on behalf of STARZ.
