The first images have been released for BBC One and AMC’s adaptation of Adam Kayās multi-million copy bestsellerĀ ‘This is Going to Hurt’.
The seven-part series stars Ben Whishaw, Dame Harriet Walter, Ambika Mod, Michele Austin, Alex Jennings and Rory Fleck Byrne. It has wrapped filming and will launch on BBC One and iPlayer.
At times hilarious, at times devastating,Ā ‘This is Going to Hurt’Ā follows Adam (Whishaw), a doctorĀ who we find wending his way through the ranks of hospital hierarchy ā junior enough to suffer the crippling hours, but senior enough to face a constant barrage of terrifying responsibilities. Adam is clinging to his personal life as he is increasingly overwhelmed by stresses at work: the 97-hour weeks, the life and death decisions, and all the while knowing the hospital parking meter is earning more than him.

Whishaw is joined by newcomerĀ Ambika ModĀ as Shruti, a young junior doctor just starting in obstetrics and gynaecology. Naturally bright, diligent and caring, she has everything it takes to be a great doctor, but the job still finds ways to throw her into chaos and doubt.
Michele AustinĀ (‘Meet the Richardsons’, ‘The Casual Vacancy’) plays Tracy, a confident, sharp-witted senior midwife and BAFTA-nominatedĀ Alex JenningsĀ (‘The Crown’, ‘A Very English Scandal’, ‘Unforgotten’, ‘The Lady in the Van’) plays Mr Lockhart, a consultant and Adamās domineering boss.Ā Kadiff KirwanĀ (‘Chewing Gum’, ‘This Way Up’, ‘The Stranger’) plays Julian, Adamās colleague and professional rival andĀ Ashley McGuireĀ (‘This Country’,Ā ‘Malory Towers’, ‘Itās A Sin’) plays Miss Houghton, a formidable and forthright consultantĀ who spots potential in Shruti.
EMMY-nominatedĀ Harriet WalterĀ (‘Killing Eve’,Ā ‘The Crown’, ‘Succession’) plays Veronique, Adamās mother.Ā Rory Fleck ByrneĀ (‘Harlots’,Ā ‘Vita and Virginia’,Ā ‘Ghosts’) plays Adamās boyfriend Harry, andĀ Tom Durant-PritchardĀ (‘Feel Good’, ‘The Windsors’, ‘Judy’, ‘The Crown’) plays Adamās best friend Greg; his two closest relationships and the ones forced to face the brunt of the pressures he faces at work.
The series is based on Adam Kayās award-winning international multi-million selling memoir of the same name, which has sold over 2.5 million copies to date and has been translated into 37 languages.Ā It is created, written and executive produced by Kay himself.
