Harry Potter: Wizards Unite launches on iOS and Android

It seems ages since Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was announced and that’s because it is, the game was first announced back in November 2017. Well it’s time to grab your wands as the wait is finally over. Niantic (Pokémon Go) and WB Games have officially launched the game for iOS and Android devices in the UK, US, Australia and New Zealand. It will launch in additional countries around the world in the days ahead.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is an augmented reality (AR) real-world mobile game released under the Portkey Games label. The game is built on the Niantic Real World Platform and created using the game design and content creation expertise of WB Games San Francisco.

As new recruits of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, players must investigate the chaotic magical activity that is leaking into the Muggle world and work together to solve the mystery of this Calamity. Players can explore their real-world neighbourhoods and cities to discover mysterious artefacts, cast spells, and encounter fantastic beasts and iconic characters along the way.

I’ve played through the first 5 levels of the game and so far it’s a lot of fun. It obviously has similarities to Pokémon Go but with a Harry Potter twist. It’s jam-packed with content and features some impressive graphics too. In my first hours with the game I’ve created my Ministry ID, complete with a custom wand and profile pic using SnapChat style lenses.

I’ve also found many items known as Confoundables, cast my first spells and brewed some potions. The spellcasting is done by tracing patterns on the screen with your finger and the more accurate you are the more powerful the spell. It also has a similar system to incubating eggs in Pokémon Go, but here your steps are used to unlock Porkeys. So far I’ve been impressed and will be playing some more over the coming days.

Players in the launch regions can download the game for free starting today on the App Store for iPhone, Google Play for Android devices and the Samsung Galaxy Apps Store for Samsung devices. Check out the official Harry Potter: Wizards Unite website for more information.
