We’ve got some great news for Guardians of the Galaxy fans as, according to Deadline, James Gunn has been rehired by Disney to direct the third film. They also report that this news has been confirmed by both Marvel and Gunn’s representatives.
It seems that the decision to bring Gunn back was actually made some months ago. Gunn was initially fired from the project in July 2018 due to some offensive decade old tweets being dug up. Since the firing Gunn was nothing but apologetic for his past behaviour and publicly accepted full blame.

Despite firing him from the project the plan was to still use his script for the film. Fans have been crying out for his return and the cast were also very supportive by signing a joint statement. Most vocal was Drax actor, Dave Bautista, who threatened to quit if Gunn wasn’t brought back on.
Since the firing, Gunn was hired to write and direct Suicide Squad 2. The film isn’t due out until August 2021, so it looks like we’re in for quite the wait for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
