One of the world’s foremost elephant conservationists, Saba Douglas-Hamilton has added brand new material to her acclaimed show A Life with Elephants. Starting in Worthing’s Connaught Theatre, in April 2019, Saba will captivate audiences across the UK with stories of her life and work in Kenya, where she lives with her husband and three children, coming into contact with some of the most endangered wildlife on the planet.
Whilst sharing remarkable tales from growing up in the Great Rift Valley and meeting her first wild elephant when she was just six weeks old, to working with the Save the Rhino Trust in Namibia, and then joining her father Iain Douglas-Hamilton’s charity Save the Elephants in 1997, Saba will highlight the continuing importance of the work of Save the Elephants and inspire audiences with ways that they can get involved in conservation.
Saba and her family continue to pioneer the concept of conservation tourism with the eco-friendly Elephant Watch Camp, where they embrace the principles of eco-tourism to improve livelihoods and reinforce the conservation ethos of local cultures, to protect and preserve wild areas and animals. Saba engages closely with the nomadic people of Northern Kenya to help them to adapt in this fast changing world and, as they are natural leaders of conservation, to harness their culture, traditional skills and way of life to build a more sustainable future.
In the year and a half since Saba last toured the UK with A Life with Elephants, there have been significant developments in the ongoing work of Save the Elephants, and the Elephant Crisis Fund – founded by Save the Elephants and the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation – is now the most effective elephant conservation fund in the world. Due to their hard work, there has been a significant reduction in poaching in Kenya.
