Ninjin: Clash Of Carrots preview

Mix a healthy splash of colour with side scrolling beat ’em up action and you’ll get Ninjin: Clash of Carrots. Coming September 4th, 2018, this cute title promises a lot of non-stop action perfect for playing on the couch with a friend, online, or serving it up ninja style on your own!

There’s plenty to keep your carrots peeled for–if you’re a fan of anime, or CalArts styling, Ninjin: Clash of Carrots will satisfy your taste in art to no end. For a nice retro boot it appears in pixel form adding to its overall cuteness. The battles are set in scenes of constant running from our hero Ninjin, really setting up for an exciting pace to play as the feeling of constantly moving forward envelopes.

As the state that it’s in now, Ninjin: Clash of Carrots proves to handle slick and make you feel great playing it. Plenty of rewards–collecting carrots works as an in-game currency that’s used to purchase upgrades from an adorable Corgi vendor. These upgrades are wacky, useful and feel pretty endless in options as you spend your time getting better swords, projectiles, masks and more. It’s important to spice up the overall simplicity of a beat ’em up to keep the feeling fresh, and Ninjin: Clash of Carrots appears to do just that by being able to customize your character’s equipment.

The Oni TV Show is in addition to the story mode, being a survival mode with promises of rich rewards. You can play this one with a friend or on your own, fighting against endless waves to see who can last the longest. Aside from grinding for carrots, this mode looks to be a great time and will push you to hone your ninja skills to really get the good stuff.

Playing through the first couple levels honestly there’s only a few issues to raise, and most just involve tightening up the gameplay a bit, and perhaps offer varying difficulties for a younger audience. In the glance I had of Ninjin: Clash of Carrots, it plays well, feels fun and IS fun. Enemies are unique and will keep you on your toes (paws?).

What I look forward to the most is the option for online play and all the upgrades there will be to have. It will be most enjoyable to finally pick this one up for my Xbox One when it comes out, sitting side by side with my kid, and going after that pesky Shogun Moe to get those carrots back!

Ninjin: Clash of Carrots is coming to Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One and PC on September 4th. EF Games will have a full review around release.
