Lukas Nelson has been quietly forging his own path in music, following in the footsteps of his legendary father Willie Nelson. He formed his band, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Realm, in 2008 and he’s been busy performing across C2C: Country to Country 2018 all weekend. Before he took to the stage at the after-show party last night, Nelson performed a solo acoustic set on the Spotlight Stage inside The O2 Arena.
He opened his two-song performance with Just Outside of Austin from his self-titled album. Armed with an acoustic guitar, Nelson showed off both his voice and his skills as a musician. He quickly went on to prove that he’s a very gifted vocalist and he has the ability to take his voice from a steady, almost-hushed tone to a powerful guttural yell. Just Outside of Austin was a pure slice of traditional Country and it was a nice change in pace following Sugarland’s polished set.
For his second song Nelson performed Find Yourself, a song that features Lady Gaga. It worked really well as a solo track and Nelson’s vocal performance was nothing short of spectacular. You could tell he was completely lost in the music and he soared to incredible heights with his voice. The song’s soulful groove was infectious and Nelson was pretty spectacular to witness, managing to silence the rather noisy audience he was playing to.
In just two short songs, Nelson made sure that people won’t forget him after he left the stage. Coming from such a rich musical heritage, it’s no surprise that Nelson is as gifted a musician as he is but unlike other people in his position, he’s bringing his own flavour to the genre and it’s one that is striking a chord with Country fans that prefer their music traditional and unadulterated. Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real will be back in the UK this summer for a headline show and last night’s performance is sure to have helped sell plenty of those tickets.
