Dierks Bentley sat down with selected UK press prior to his recent show at the Eventim Apollo Hammersmith in London to talk about his new album Black.
The beginnings of Black actually came about a while back. Dierks explains, “I had this crazy idea to write a concept album that revolved around an affair. I had it about two years ago and I presented it to my producer and he loved it. It felt a little contrived so I put it away.”
Elaborating on the original concept he came up with, Dierks says, “I wrote this album about a guy who finds somebody, he leaves her, then he finds somebody new and things are awesome but that of course tanks. He figures it out and grows at the end of it. I kind of forgot all about that.”
When he started working on what would eventually become Black, Dierks noticed a strange coincidence in relation to his original concept for the album. “I started working on this record and at the end when I had all these songs about two years later, I was in a coffee shop trying to sequence the album and I pulled out the original chapters I had. Some of these songs really fit in perfectly.
The album, if you listen to it from start to end, has a mysterious element of love. It wasn’t contrived; it all just kind of happened naturally.”
Black is released on Friday 27th May 2016. Watch the video for I’ll Be the Moon below:
